P. Pio Mattevi

Il 21 febbraio 2015, a Parma intorno alle ore 21.00 si è spento P. Pio Mattevi. Aveva 76 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Gresta di Segonzano (Trento – Italia) il 05.05.1938.
Educato e formato nel Seminario arcivescovile di Trento, dalla preparatoria alla teologia, fu ordinato presbitero il 28 giugno 1964. Il 23 luglio chiese di essere accolto tra i Saveriani: «Anche se non conosco la vita della comunità saveriana, penso di poterla vivere con la grazia di Dio, perché sono disposto ad accettare tutto per la gloria di Dio e la salvezza delle anime». Ad ottobre entrò all'Istituto nel Noviziato di Nizza Monferrato.
«P. Pio si ispira a criteri di moderazione. Ha una volontà buona. In Noviziato si è impegnato con metodo e costanza, facendo un buon lavoro spirituale ... non è una canna che si piega ad ogni soffiar di vento. È fedele e s’impegna: ha il senso del dovere» (9.9.65), scrisse di lui P. Maestro, presentandolo per la Prima Professione che emise il 3 ottobre 1965 a Parma.
Dopo la Professione P. Pio fu destinato al Bangladesh. «Vedo che è un’ obbedienza che mi costerà non poco, ma con l’aiuto Dio abbraccio questa croce con gioia e riconoscenza. Dio mi ha scelto e manda per questa via: sia fatta la volontà di Dio» (Lettera a P. Generale, 6.10.65).
Studiò l’inglese negli USA, nella comunità saveriana di S. Jose, CA. Raggiunse quindi il Bangladesh (allora Pakistan Orientale) e dopo lo studio della lingua bengalese iniziò il suo servizio missionario. Dal ‘67 al ‘73 lavorò a Shelabunia come Vice parroco e Preside della scuola superiore San Paolo. Dal ‘74 al ‘75 frequentò un corso di aggiornamento all’East Asian Pastoral Institute di Manila.
Ritornato in Bangladesh fu fatto parroco della parrocchia di S. Giuseppe a Khulna (‘75-‘80) e poi Economo e Procuratore diocesano (‘81-‘85). «Di P. Pio – è la testimonianza di P. Giacomo Gobbi – a Khulna ricordano ancora quello che ha fatto, durante la guerra di Liberazione del Bangladesh, a favore dei cristiani e degli Hindu, sostenuto da un ufficiale cattolico dell'esercito pakistano. Come parroco, oltre alla sua dedizione pastorale e alla sua sensibilità umanitaria nei confronti dei poveri ha dimostrato anche lungimiranza nel rendersi conto dei problemi della urbanizzazione. E senza dimenticare i suoi interventi decisi e mirati durante le catastrofi naturali. La sua saggezza, che si faceva forte degli esempi e degli insegnamenti degli anziani, la sua calma e fermezza di carattere hanno sempre creato nella comunità un senso di sicurezza, di serenità e di pace».
Nel 1979 i Superiori gli chiesero l’avvicendamento negli USA. P. Pio rispose: «Per me lasciare la missione è troncare un po’ tutto sul più bello e mi costerà… ciò nonostante, questa è la via della pace e la volontà di Dio» (Lett. 28.12.79). E per cinque anni collaborò, a Holliston, nel ministero e nell’animazione missionaria.
Nel 1992 rientrò in Bangladesh dove rimase sino alla vigilia della morte: Direttore del Centro Catechetico di Jessore (‘92-‘98; 2002-2013), e del Fatima Hospital; Parroco di Bhabarpara (‘98-‘01).
«In Bangladesh lavoriamo per una società senza divisioni per favorire migliori condizioni di vita alle persone nel campo dell’assistenza, del sociale e delle attività agricole. Il Paese è in via di sviluppo e il dialogo ha dato a noi l’occasione per mettere in luce i valori del cristianesimo e, viceversa, delle religioni musulmana e indù. Siamo riusciti a mantenere la pace e promuovere forme miste di sviluppo quali cooperative per la coltivazione di riso in zone a prevalenza indù e musulmana. Tutti siamo consapevoli che il dialogo aiuta ad essere migliori: in Bangladesh siamo una minoranza ma attraverso il dialogo possiamo farci conoscere».
Trascorse gli ultimi mesi in cura a Parma e «quando il confratello medico, Dott. Gildo gli sussurrò che stava avvicinandosi al traguardo finale, alla meta oltre le vette da lui scalate, con grande dignità rispose sereno con un sussurro di voce: “Bene, sia fatta allora la santa volontà di Dio”» (P. Scagliuso, Liturgia delle Esequie).

Fr. Pio Mattevi died on 21 February 2015 in Parma. Born in Gresta di Segonzano (Trento – Italy), on 5 May 1938, he was 76 years old.
He was educated and formed at the Seminary of Trento up to the end of the theology program. He was ordained priest on 28 June 1964. On 23 July he asked to join the Xaverians: «Even though I am not familiar with the life of the Xaverian community, I believe I can live it with the help of God’s grace because I am willing to accept everything for the glory of God and the salvation of souls». He joined the Institute in October, in the Novitiate community of Nizza Monferrato.
The Novice Master presented the following report for his admission to the First Profession: «Fr. Pio lives a life of moderation. He has good will. During his Novitiate he worked with method and consistency, doing good spiritual work on himself ... he is not one to be influenced by any wind that blows. He is faithful and committed and possesses a keen sense of duty» (9.9.65). He made his First Profession in Parma on 3 October 1965.
After his Profession he was sent to Bangladesh. «This obedience will be very demanding, but with the help of God I accept this cross with joy and gratitude. God has chosen me and has asked me to follow this path: may his will be done » (Letter to the Superior General, 6.10.65).
He studied English in the USA, in the Xaverian community of S. Jose, CA. He arrived in Bangladesh (which was then known as East Pakistan) and, after studying the language, he began his missionary service. From 1967 until 1973 he worked in Shelabunia as assistant priest and headmaster of St. Paul’s school. From 1974 until 1975 he attended an updating course at the East Asian Pastoral Institute of Manila.
On his return to Bangladesh he was appointed parish priest of the parish of St. Joseph, Khulna (1975-80) and then Treasurer and diocesan Procurator (1981-1985). Fr. Giacomo Gobbi says: «In Khulna the people still remember what Fr. Pio did during the war of Liberation in Bangladesh to assist Christians and Hindus with the help of a Catholic officer of the Pakistani army. As parish priest, in addition to his pastoral dedication and humanitarian sensitivity towards the poor, he showed foresight in becoming aware of the problems posed by urbanization, to say nothing of his determined and focused interventions during natural disasters. His wisdom, which drew inspiration from the example and teachings of the elderly, his calm and firmness of character, always created a sense of security, serenity and peace in the community».
In 1979 the Superiors asked him to accept a period of rotation in the USA. Fr. Pio replied: «For me, to leave the mission now is like breaking off just when things are at their peak and this will cost me a lot … however, this is the way of peace and it is God’s will» (Letter, 28.12.79). He worked for five years in ministry and missionary animation in Holliston.
He returned to Bangladesh in 1992 and remained there until shortly before his death: he served as Director of the Catechetics Center in (1992-98; 2002-2013) and Fatima Hospital and was parish priest in Bhabarpara (1998-2001).
«In Bangladesh we are working for a society without divisions, and to promote better conditions of life for people in the fields of assistance, social work and the farming sector. The country is developing and dialogue has given us the opportunity to highlight the values of Christianity and, vice versa, the Muslim and Hindu religions. We have managed to preserve peace and promote mixed forms of development, such as cooperatives for the cultivation of rice in areas that are mainly Hindu and Muslim. We are all aware that dialogue helps us to be better people: we are a minority in Bangladesh, but dialogue will help us to make ourselves known».
He spent the last months of his life receiving nursing care in Parma and «when our confrere Dr. Gildo whispered to him that the end of his earthly life was approaching, with great dignity and serenity he replied: “May God’s holy will be done”» (Fr. Scagliuso during the funeral).
