P. GIOVANNI MONTESI

Entrò all'Istituto nel Noviziato di Nizza Monferrato il 2.10.1964. Emise la Prima Professione il 3.10.1965. Fu assistente a Vicenza (65-66).

Riposi in pace.

FR. GIOVANNI MONTESI

Fr. Giovanni Montesi, died in the General Hospital, Doula, on 1 August 2016, after suffering a brain hemorrhage on 16 July.

Born in Corinaldo (Ancona-Italy), on 3 June  1941, he was 75 years old.

He studied at the Seminary of Senigallia until the third year of Theology; in 1964 he responded to the appeal of Pope Pius XII, in the Encyclical Letter Fidei Donum (21.4.57), on behalf of Africa and Latin America and made himself «available for a work based on presence, sharing, and human and Christian growth with the people in the missions ... It became my life-long passion» (Interview, October 2015).

On 15 July 1964, he wrote to the Superior General: «I choose the Xaverian Missionaries also because of the universality of their missions, which will enable me to give myself entirely, without reserve, or any other prospects other than those that the Lord will reveal to me through obedience ».

His family approved of his decision, just as they had done when his brother Eugenio had left the Seminary in Senigallia to join the Xaverians in 1958: «I am grateful to the Lord for the great serenity … that my mother gives to us with her solidarity and supporting our mission with her life» (Letter, 19.7.64).

He joined the Institute for Novitiate at Nizza Monferrato on 2 October 1964 and made his First Profession on 3 October 1965. He served as assistant for one year at Vicenza (1965-66) and completed the final year of Theology at Parma, where he was ordained priest on 16 October 1966.

After his ordination he worked as formator and teacher in the Lyceum community of Tavernerio (1967-72) and among the adult vocations at Desio (1972-76).

In 1977 he was assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he worked in the pastoral ministry (Bunyakiri 1977-83), in the service of authority (1980-85) and in formation in the Theology community of Yaoundé (1985-89).

He proved to be a zealous messenger of the Kingdom and a tireless missionary animator of his native Church. He never missed an opportunity to exhort his people «to bear witness to Christ in their own lives [because] it makes our proclamation in the mission more credible; cultivate hospitality, solidarity and the dialogue of life and of faith with those from the southern hemisphere …; promote education to globality that will help people to adopt a stance of solidarity and justice in the face of the great problems affecting the world».

In 1989 he was elected Vicar General and served as Councilor for Formation (1989-95). At the end of his mandate he returned to Cameroon.

«I return willingly, ready to perceive the signs of the Lord’s presence and action as he fulfills his plans for a new humanity that will be capable of overcoming many limitations and forms of evil, in order to achieve new levels of dignity, life and solidarity. A twofold commitment awaits me: pastoral work and human promotion in the small communities scattered around the district of Oyom Abang, in collaboration with the lay people in charge and the group animators; a formation commitment in the small community of Xaverian students at the International Theology community of Yaoundé» (Interview, 1997). He worked for another 20 years in Cameroon, between Yaoundé (1997-2002) and Douala (2002-16), in formation and the first proclamation.

Fr. Giovanni was an enthusiastic and profoundly Confortian missionary. In greetings to Corinaldo on 23 August 1982, he said: «Thanks for your “presence” and your contribution to this adventure of the Kingdom of God, who gets our lives involved in this undertaking!

Keeping our eyes on Christ together, our following Him in his way of thinking, loving and acting, makes us Church and makes us feel “at home” wherever we are».

May he rest in peace.
