1940-2024

Venerdì 31 maggio 2024, intorno alle ore 12.30 (ora locale) è deceduto presso l’Ospedale Nishida Izumisano, Osaka, Giappone, il nostro confratello p. Pier Giorgio Manni. Aveva 83 anni, essendo nato a Massino Visconti, Novara, Italia, il 9 novembre 1940.

Dopo la I° Scuola Media Inferiore, Pier Giorgio entra nel Seminario Minore Diocesano di Arona (diocesi di Novara - Italia), dove frequenta fino alla V° Ginnasio. In seguito, va nel Seminario Maggiore di Novara dove frequenta il Liceo Classico ottenendo il Diploma di maturità classica presso l’Istituto Statale “S. Maria” in Pallanza-Verbania, Novara. In questi anni di formazione diocesana, Pier Giorgio coltiva i rapporti con i Saveriani pp. Bartolomeo Elia e Valter Giovanni Gardini.  

A 19 anni, Pier Giorgio entra in Istituto a San Pietro in Vincoli, il 1° ottobre 1959. Qui, dopo l’anno di Noviziato, emette la prima professione religiosa e missionaria (03.10.1960). Frequenta la Teologia a Parma dove emette la Professione Perpetua (21.09.1963) e riceve l’Ordine del Presbiterato (13.10.1963). 

Il 25 settembre 1964 P. Pier Giorgio viene destinato al Giappone dove vi rimarrà per tutta la sua vita: 

1964-1966 a Kobe per lo studio della lingua giapponese

1966 a Kishiwada come cappellano

1966-1971 a Izumisano come cappellano

1971-1972 segue alcuni corsi nel campo dell’educazione presso l’E.S.A.E (Esclusione Sociale: Analisi ed Esperienze) di Milano, Italia.

1972-1974 a Kobe (casa regionale) come rettore

1972-1978 a Kobe (casa regionale) come economo regionale

1974-1980 a Haruki come Direttore di Scuola Materna

1978-1984 è Consigliere Regionale

1980-1982 a Kishiwada come parroco 

1982-1984 a Kishiwada come viceparroco 

1984-1989 è Superiore Regionale

1989 è Delegato al XII Capitolo Generale (Nemi, Italia)

1989-1996 a Haruki come incaricato della casa

1989-1992 è Economo Regionale

1991 Anno di Aggiornamento a Cali-Colombia (Casa Regionale)

1992 a Tavernerio per le 4 settimane di Spiritualità Saveriana

1996-1998 prima a Kobe e poi a Izumisano come Superiore Regionale 

1998-2000 a Kumatori per ministero e come Direttore della Scuola Materna

1999 a Tavernerio per i Tre mesi

2000-2005 a Haruki come Direttore della Scuola; incaricato della Casa; economo locale.

2004-2005 è Economo Regionale

2005-2013 a Izumisano è Superiore Regionale

2005-2006 a Haruki come Direttore della Scuola Materna

2007 è Delegato Capitolare al XV Capitolo Generale

2013 è Delegato Capitolare al XVI Capitolo Generale 

2014-2016 a Kaizuka come Direttore della Scuola Materna e come parroco della parrocchia di Kaizuka 

2016-2022 a Izumisano como Direttore della Scuola Materna e come parroco della parrocchia di Izumisano

Dal 2022 P. Pier Giorgio si trovava nella Casa Regionale di Izumisano in cura e impegnato nel ministero.   

«Reverendissimo Padre,  
con cuore traboccante di gioia posso rivolgermi a Lei per farle domanda di ammissione al noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli per entrare tra le file dei figlioli di Mons. Conforti. Sono un seminarista novarese, di Massimo Visconti, ed ho frequentato il terzo corso liceale presso il nostro Seminario, ottenendo il diploma di maturità classica presso una scuola statale (veramente dovrei dire che l’otterrò perché devo riparare matematica e fisica!). A Lei esprimo il mio desiderio e la decisa volontà di essere un Saveriano fedele ai suoi doveri. Già conosco un poco la mia famiglia per la relazione con un chierico Saveriano e con p. Valter Giovanni Gardini, ma desidero ardentemente di conoscere più a fondo e di vivere con sincerità e generosità lo spirito di totale dedizione che la Regola propone. I Superiori del Seminario hanno apprezzato questo mio desiderio, incoraggiandomi a seguire fino in fondo la via del Signore…. Reverendissimo Padre, quante cose ho trascurato oppure dimenticato; ma certo non posso dimenticare di chiedere a Lei tutto ciò che è necessario fare o avere per poter raggiungere il nido dove si formano gli “aquilotti” del domani. E le posso assicurare una sola cosa: fin d’ora io sono Saveriano e con ansia attendo di poterlo essere totalmente…»

In seguito all’aggravarsi delle sue condizioni di salute, P. Piergiorgio era stato ricoverato presso l’Ospedale Nishida Izumisano, Osaka. Qui, il 31 maggio 2024, festa della Visitazione di Maria, sale in Cielo per ricevere la ricompensa del servitore fedele e buono.

«Reverendissimo padre, 

chiedo a Lei e a tutta la famiglia Saveriana di essere ammesso nella sua dolce intimità come membro certo e definitivo con la Professione Perpetua. Conosco i vincoli santi dei quali desidero riceverne il peso per Cristo. Lui lo farà “dulce pondus”. I miei limiti sono tanti, ma desidero essere sempre più fedele a Cristo e a Mons. Conforti. 

La firma a questa domanda dice il mio deciso impegno ad accogliere fino in fondo il dovere della povertà, della virginità e della ubbidienza. Questa domanda è pure segno del mio amore per la famiglia Saveriana di cui desidero essere membro fedele e premuroso. Devotissimo»

Fr. Piergiorgio Manni

1940-2024

On Friday, May 31^st, 2024, around 12:30 (local time), our 83-year-old confrere Fr. Pier Giorgio Manni passed away at Nishida Hospital in Izumisano, Osaka, Japan. 

He was born in Massino Visconti, Novara, Italy, on November 9^th, 1940.

Pier Giorgio entered the Minor Seminary in Arona, Diocese of Novara, Italy, after the first year of middle school; he would attend it till the fifth year of junior high school (ginnasio). Subsequently, he moved to the Major Seminary in Novara to attend high school (Liceo) and obtain a Diploma di Maturità Classica from “S. Maria” Istituto Statale in Pallanza-Verbania, Novara. Meanwhile, he was building up contacts with the Xaverian Fr. Meo Elia and Valter Giovanni Gardini.  

On October 1^st, 1959, at the age of 19, he entered our Institute in San Pietro in Vincoli. There, at the end of the Novitiate, he made his first religious and missionary profession (October 3^rd, 1960). He continued his Xaverian training in Parma, where he made his Perpetual Profession (September 21^st, 1963) and was Ordained a Priest (October 13^th, 1963).

On September 25^th, 1964, he was assigned to Japan, where he would remain for his entire life:

1964-1966: in Kobe to study the Japanese language.

1966: in Kishiwada as assistant parish priest.

1966-1971: in Izumisano as assistant parish priest.

1971-1972: he attended some courses on education at ESAE (Esclusione Sociale: Analisi ed Esperienze) in Milan, Italy.

1972-1974: in Kobe as Rector of the regional house.

1972-1978: in Kobe at the regional house as Regional Treasurer.

1974-1980: in Haruki as kindergarten Director. 

1978-1984: Regional Councillor.

1980-1982: in Kishiwada as Pastor.

1982-1984: in Kishiwada as assistant parish priest.

1984-1989: Regional Superior.

1989: Delegate to the XII General Chapter (Nemi, Italy).

1989-1996: in charge of the house in Haruki.

1989-1992: Regional Treasurer.

1991: sabbatical year in Cali-Colombia (Regional House).

1992: in Tavernerio for the four weeks of Xaverian Spirituality.

1996-1998: first in Kobe, then in Izumisano as Regional Superior. 

1998-2000: in Kumatori for ministry and as Kindergarten Director.

1999: in Tavernerio for the three months on-going formation programme.

2000-2005: in Haruki as School Director, in charge of the house and local treasurer.

2004-2005:  Regional Treasurer. 

2005-2013: in Izumisano as Regional Superiore.

2005-2006:  in Haruki as Kindergarten Director.

2007: Delegate to the XV General Chapter. 

2013: Delegate to the XVI General Chapter.

2014-2016: in Kaizuka as Kindergarten Director and Pastor of the parish in  Kaizuka.

2016-2022: in Izumisano as kindergarten Director and Pastor of the parish in Izumisano

Since 2022, Fr. Pier Giorgio had been living in the Regional House in Izumisano, where he was receiving health care and carrying out ministry.

«Most Reverend Father, 
It is with a heart overflowing with joy that I can turn to You to apply for admission to the novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli and thus join the ranks of Msgr. Conforti's children. I am a Novara-born seminarian, from Massimo Visconti; I attended the third high school course at our local Seminary, obtaining the diploma of maturity in classical studies at a state school (actually, I should say that I will obtain it because I have to resit the exam of maths and physics!). To you I express my desire and determination to be a Xaverian faithful to his duties. I already know my family a little through my relationship with a Xaverian student (chierico) and with Fr. Valter Giovanni Gardini, but I ardently desire to know more deeply and to live with sincerity and generosity the spirit of total dedication proposed by the Rule. The Superiors of the Seminary praised this desire of mine and encouraged me to follow the way of the Lord to the end.... Most Reverend Father, I may have overlooked or forgotten many things,  but I certainly cannot forget to ask You what one must do or have in order to be able to reach the nest where the “eaglets” of tomorrow are trained. I can assure you of one thing alone: as of now I am a Xaverian and eagerly await the day when I can be one totally...»

Following the worsening of his health condition, Fr. Piergiorgio was taken to Nishida Hospital in Izumisano, Osaka. There, on May 31^st, 2024, feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he went up to Heaven to receive the recompense of the faithful and good servant.

I ask you and the entire Xaverian family to be admitted into her sweet fellowship as a true and definite member through the Perpetual Profession. I am aware of the holy bonds whose burden I am willing to bear for Christ. He will transform it into a “dulce pondus” (sweet burden). I have many limits, but I wish to be always faithful to Christ and Msgr. Conforti. 

The signature to this letter of request expresses my resolute commitment to accept the demands of poverty, chastity and obedience to the end. This request is also a sign of my love for the Xaverian family whose faithful and caring member I wish to be. Faithfully»
