Nacque a Noceto (PR) il 5.XI.1885. A ventidue anni, la sera del 2.XI.1907 entrava nel Seminario Emiliano per le Missioni Estere accolto dal Fondatore Mons. Conforti. Emessa la Professione Religiosa il 3.XII.1908 ed ultimati gli Studi Teologici, venne ordinato Sacerdote il 15.IV.1911 per le mani di Mons. Conforti.
Un mese dopo, il 16.V.1911, partiva, all'età di 25 anni, per la Cina, assieme al P. Amatore Dagnino. Il saluto con il Fondatore e con la Famiglia Saveriana avvenne nella "Cappella Martiri" della Casa Madre. Manca il discorso che il Fondatore tenne in quell'occasione; il "Giornale del Popolo" in data 20 maggio commentò la circostanza:
"I giovani Missionari P. Prina (Castellina di Soragna) e P. A. Dagnino (S. Secondo Parmense) hanno dato l'addio ai parenti ed agli amici... La funzione fu commoventissima. xxxx Nella Cappella del Seminario delle Missioni celebrò la S. Messa il Vescovo Mons. Conforti, dinanzi a buon numero di convenuti e disse poi, alla cerimonia dell'Imposizione della Croce ai due Missionari, alcune parole piene di quella diffusa soavità che sempre anima l'oratoria del nostro ama-tissimo Vescovo. Fremeva in quella breve parlata la gioia di poter dare ancora due Apostoli alla Cina insieme al rincrescimento per l'imminente distacco dei due bravi giovani che crebbero nell'Istituto fondato da lui...”.
Durante i suoi 36 anni di apostolato missionario in Cina, il P. Prina lavorò con i suoi Confratelli nell'Honan Occidentale, sotto le direttive di Mons. Luigi Calza, nella Diocesi di Cheng-chow.
Testimoni viventi che lavorarono come missionari accanto a lui testimoniano che negli ultimi anni di vita il P. Prina si era chiuso nel suo animo, accettando con fatica la collaborazione con gli altri.
Nella Rivista "Le Missioni illustrate", nel numero doppio di novembre-dicembre 1947 alle pagine 183-184 è riportato un lungo resoconto del P. Rovedatti, in cui si descrivono le ultime ore del P. Prina. Colpito da appendicite acuta sfociata in peritonite, moriva a Hsiang-sien la sera del 28.VIII.1947.

Fr. Elio Prina died at Hsiang-sien (china) of peritonitis following appendicitis on Aug. 28 1947. He was 61 years old, born at Noceto on Nov. 5 1885.
In the evening of Nov. 2 1907, when he was 22 years old, he entered the Emilian Seminary for Foreign Missions, welcomed by the founder Bishop Conforti. He professed Religious vows on Dec. 3 1908 and, at the end of his studies of theology, was ordained a priest on Apr. 15 1911 by the hands of Bishop Conforti.
On May 16, a month later, he left for China together with Fr. Amatore Dagnino, at the age of 25. The last goodbye of the Founder and the Xaverian Family was in the Chapel of Martyrs at the Mother House, and even though the discourse of the founder is missing, these are the words reported by the newspaper “Il Giornale del Popolo” on May 20 1911: “The young missionaries Father Prina (of Castellina di Soragna) and Father Dagnino (of S. Secondo Parmense) bade farewell to their relatives and friends last Tuesday. They are now en-route to Western Honan in China where they will join the other confreres who await them in the fervor of the apostolate.
The simple function before their departure was moving indeed. It took place in the Chapel of the Mission Seminary, which was prepared for the festive occasion. His Excellency our Bishop celebrated Mass for the large number of those present and then at the ceremony of the imposition of the crucifix on the two missionaries he spoke a few words reflective of that warmth of spirit, which always seems to animate the discourses of our Bishop.
In his brief discourse was evidenced the joy he had in being able to give another two apostles to China, as well as the sorrow at the imminent departure of two fine young men of the institute founded by him…
Go forth, o generous apostles, - we make our own the words of Monsignor Conforti - we do not wish terrestrial riches for you, nor earthly consolations. We wish to accompany you with the thought and the wish for great profit in the conquests which you will seek in the name of the Lord."
During his 36 years of missionary life in China, Fr. Prina worked with his confreres in Western Honan, under the direction of Msgr. Luigi Calza, in the diocese of Cheng-chow. Those who lived with him noticed, though, that towards the end of his life, Fr. Prina closed himself in, not willing to receive any help from his confreres. Affected by appendicitis which turned into peritonitis, he died at Hsiang-sien, where he’s also buried.
