P. Francesco Del Fabbro

Nacque a Lavariano di Mortegliano (UD) il 14.IX.1899 da Pietro e Mondini Anna; divenne ben presto un abile falegname. A 25 anni, nell'agosto 1924, assieme ad un amico compaesano, veniva a Parma per entrare nell'Istituto Missioni Estere, accoltovi dal Fondatore.
Emessa la Professione religioso-missionaria l'8.IX.1927 venne ordinato Sacerdote il 28.II.1932 ad Amalfi, mentre si trovava nella Casa Saveriana di Vallo della Lucania (SA) in qualità di Assistente dei giovani studenti missionari.
Trascorsi due anni come Vicerettore nella stessa Casa di Vallo, ed altri a Parma come incaricato per la propaganda missionaria, partiva per la Cina il 29.III.1936, assieme al P. Incerti e al Fr. Gemma, destinato al Vicariato Apostolico di Loyang.
Il mensile Missionari Saveriani, nel numero di marzo 1948, sotto il titolo "Lutto in Famiglia" così scrive:
"Il nostro caro P. Francesco Del Fabbro ci ha lasciati calmo e sereno come era sempre vissuto mezzo a noi...
Andò in missione a quasi quarant’anni e vi compì un lavoro costante, coscienzioso, e metodico basato soltanto sul senso del dovere e della responsabilità proprio degli uomini maturi, perché l'età delle fantasie (qualora per lui fosse esistita...) l'aveva trascorsa tra pialla e martello.
Solito a pensate più per gli altri che a sé stesso, quando gli fu proposto il rimpatrio per curarsi della malattia che doveva portarlo alla tomba, fece questo ragionamento: "Lassù sui monti non è possibile una cura… Nella Residenza Episcopale potrei avere più assistenza, ma stare senza fare niente, sarei di peso...; di accettare un ufficio, non mi sento adatto per i grandi centri... Andiamo pure a provare in patria, restando bene inteso che se così vorrà il Signore io ritornerò in Cina, tra i miei cari monti e tra i carissimi montanari..."
"Poco dopo il suo arrivo in patria, fu operato; ma in seguito il male saltò fuori di nuovo, e questa volta inesorabile.
Un mese circa prima della sua morte (si trovava nella casa saveriana di Udine) seppe la diagnosi del suo male...; restò impassibile e da quel giorno non faceva che implorare forza per sopportare da "bravo missionario" i suoi dolori..."
Il settimanale della Diocesi di Udine La Vita Cattolica così scrisse di lui:
"Nell'Istituto Missionario dei Saveriani di Udine è santamente spirato lunedì scorso il P. Francesco Del Fabbro, di anni 49, Missionario friulano di Lavariano. Lo conoscevano bene i giovani di Azione Cattolica della Forania di Mortegliano, di cui a suo tempo fu Delegato. Soldato nella prima guerra e poi sotto la bandiera di Cristo Re e di Maria Missionaria, soldato nelle Missioni della Cina. Come fu duro il cammino della sua preparazione (mettersi a studiare a 25 anni...) così altrettanto penose furono le strade della tormentata e sfortunata Cina, che egli irrorò dei suoi sudori apostolici per sei anni, fino a che il suo zelo fu bloccato nei campi di concentramento di Nanyang. Dopo 11 anni di Cina, richiamato per migliori cure, sognò una grande Casa Missionaria nella sua piccola patria del Friuli; il Signore gradì questo suo desiderio e lo mise come pietra fondamentale in questo suo Istituto in Via Monte S. Michele..."
P. Del Fabbro morì nella Casa Saveriana di Udine il 16.II.1948, colpito da tumore.

Fr. Francesco Del Fabbro died of a tumor on Feb. 16 1948, at the Xaverian house in Udine. He was 48 years old, born at Lavariano di Mortegliano (Udine) on Sept. 14 1899.
Before entering the Xaverians at Parma, together with a classmate, in Aug. 1925, when he was 25 years old, he had been a skillful carpenter. In Parma, the Founder welcomed him. At the end of Novitiate, he professed Religious Missionary Vows on Sept. 8 1927, and was ordained priest on Feb. 28 1932 at Amalfi, during his Prefect year at the house of Vallo della Lucania (Salerno) as assistant to young missionary students.
After two years as Vice-rector of Vallo, and other years at Parma as missionary propagandist, Fr. Del Fabbro left for China on March 29 1936, together with Fr. Incerti and Br. Gemma, assigned to the Apostolic Vicariate of Loyang.
Our monthly “Missionari Saveriani” reported this article on March 1948: “Our beloved Fr. Francesco Del Fabbro has left us, calm and serene, as he normally lived… He left for China when he was almost 40 years old, and worked diligently, conscientiously, and methodically, rooting himself on his great sense of duty and responsibility, as we expect from mature men. He spent his younger fantasia years (if he ever had one) between plane and hammer. He thought of others first, and not himself. When someone suggested him to return to Italy to take care of his physical problems, he thought: ‘It’s impossible to take care of illnesses up on the mountains… I would be a heavy burden if I were to go to the Bishop’s Residence, even though I would receive great care… But I don’t feel call to great centers, or office jobs… So, let me try going back to Italy, with the condition that if the Good Lord wants it, I will return to China, to my dear villages on the mountains, and my dearest Christians.’
After his arrival to Italy, he was operated upon, but without success. A month before his death, while he was in the newly opened house of Udine, he found out the diagnosis of his sickness: a tumor. From that day onward, he just implored for strength to endure his pains and sufferings as a ‘good missionary’.”
The diocesan weekly of Udine, “La Vita Cattolica”, reported: “This past Monday Fr. Francesco Del Fabbro died a holy death at the Xaverian House of Udine. He was 49 years old, Friulian Missionary from Lavariano. He was well known by the youth of Catholic Action of the area of Mortegliano, for he was their delegate in the past. Soldier of the First World War, soldier of the fraternities of Christ the King and of the Missionary Mary, he became soldier of the Missions of China.
How hard must have been for him to prepare himself for that step, going back to studies at the age of 25. How painful must have been for him the journeys in the tormented and unfortunate China, which he watered with apostolic sweat for six years, until his zeal was blocked by the years of concentration camp at Nanyang. After 11 years of China, he was called back to Italy for health reasons, and hoped to see the opening of a Xaverian house in Friuli. The Lord granted him his wish, and put him as a corner stone of this Xaverian house in Udine…”
