P. Virginio Pugnoli

A Parma, in Casa Madre, alle 8.15 del 16.9.2002, è morto il P. Virginio Pugnoli, consumato dal tumore che si era manifestato negli ultimi mesi dello scorso anno.Aveva 81 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Pessina Cremonese (Cremona) il 7.7.1921.
Alunno del Seminario diocesano di Cremona fino alla conclusione del Liceo, entrò tra i Saveriani, nel Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli, nel 1940. Emise la Prima Professione il 1 novembre 1941.
Da S. Pietro in Vincoli passò a Parma dove frequentò i quattro anni di teologia (41-46) inframmezzati da un anno di Prefettato a Grumone (42-43). Fu ordinato presbitero il 20.4.1946.
Ricordando gli anni di formazione, il P. Virginio ha ripetuto più volte che quello del Noviziato è stato l’anno fondamentale della sua vita: «Ricordo ancora tutti i momenti… sono un po’ il mio tesoro, cui ogni tanto devo ancora attingere per continuare fedelmente nella mia vita religioso-missionaria… Ho dovuto lottare contro me stesso fino all’ultimo, perché ogni posizione nella fede, nella speranza, nella carità, nell’umiltà, nell’obbedienza, nella castità, nell’amore fraterno con i confratelli, nella pietà, nella devozione alla Madonna e al S. Cuore, alla Passione, all’Eucaristia… me la sono dovuta conquistare con tante rinunce» (Lettera, 29.6.53).
Dopo l’ordinazione gli fu chiesto di prestare il suo servizio in Italia: Economo e Insegnante a Vicenza (46-47); Vicerettore a Cremona (47.48); Propagandista, Insegnante ancora a Vicenza (48-49); Aiuto economo a Parma (49-51); Segretario Generale (51-56). Sugli ultimi due impegni espresse un giudizio articolato: « [un tipo di attività] non certo il più adatto per le mie esigenze; ma è pur vero che a questo genere di vita ero già preparato e l’avevo quasi previsto, se proprio non debba dire che è quello più conveniente alle mie doti naturali» (Lettera, 29.3.53). Certo che accanto al P. Giovanni Gazza ha imparato «come si ama la nostra Pia Società e come per essa ci si sacrifica. Ho conosciuto a fondo molti dei problemi nostri, li ho vissuti e sofferti… mi pare di amare un poco io pure la nostra Religiosa Famiglia» (Lettera, 11.10.56).
Nell’autunno del 56 fu inviato in Inghilterra per lo studio dell’inglese e, l’anno successivo, ricevette la destinazione al Giappone. Il sogno di una vita vissuta nell’apostolato diretto, però, fu di breve durata: appena il tempo per lo studio della lingua, per il servizio di vicerettore nella comunità di Kobe e per un anno di pastorale a Kobayashi.
Nel 1963 fu richiamato in Italia. Fu Rettore del Liceo Saveriano di Tavernerio (63-66) e poi, ancora Segretario Generale (66-71) e quindi Economo della Direzione Generale, Rettore della Casa generalizia (71-83). Dall’84 al 2002 ricoprì l’incarico di Amministratore della Procura di Parma e Rappresentante legale; fu pure membro del Segretariato per l’Economia e incaricato, tra l’altro, della revisione e aggiornamento del Direttorio dei beni temporali.
Passando il testimone di Amministratore, così ringraziava in particolare i confratelli incaricati dell’economia: «Penso di avere avuto con tutti un rapporto fraterno e leale. Mi piaceva stare in contatto con voi: era il mio modo di sentirmi missionario in linea con voi … vi sono riconoscente» (5.3.02).
«Padre Virginio - è la testimonianza del P. G. Ferrari nell’omelia funebre - era un Saveriano convinto e sereno. La sua morte toglie all'Istituto un confratello fedele, ma anche un testimone della sua storia recente, una memoria vivente di questi ultimi cinquanta anni nei quali egli è sempre stato un attento osservatore dei fatti e degli uomini, un uomo "positivo", capace di trovare il bene e di promuoverlo ovunque esso apparisse, ma anche attento e comprensivo con chi sbagliava».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo paradiso.

Fr. Virginio Pugnoli died in the Mother House, Parma, at 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 16 2002; he had been ill for almost a year with cancer.
Born in Pessina Cremonese (Cremona) on July 7 1921, Fr. Virginio was 81 years old.
He joined the Xaverians from the diocesan seminary of Cremona, entering Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1940. He made his First Profession on Nov. 1 1941. From S. Pietro in Vincoli, Fr. Pugnoli moved to Parma for four years of Theology (1941-46), interrupted by one year as prefect in Grumone (1942-43). He was ordained priest on April 20 1946.
Looking back at his formation years, Fr. Virginio used to say that the Novitiate was the most vital year of his life: “I remember everything ... it is my treasure, from which I draw the energy I need to remain faithful to my religious and missionary life ... I have had to struggle with myself to conquer the virtues of faith, hope, charity, humility, obedience, chastity, fraternal love, piety, devotion to Mary and the Sacred Heart, the Passion, the Eucharist ...” (Letter of June 29 1953).
After his ordination, he was assigned to Italy, where he worked as Administrator and teacher in Vicenza (1946-47); Vice-rector in Cremona (1947-48); Propagandist and Teacher in Vicenza (1948-49); Assistant administrator in Parma (1949-51); General Secretary (1951-56). Speaking about the last two assignments, he wrote: “these activities were certainly not the ones most suited to my capabilities; nevertheless, it is true to say that I was prepared for them, had almost seen them coming” (Letter of March 29 1953). Working alongside Fr. Giovanni Gazza, he learned “how to love our Congregation and how to sacrifice myself for her. I acquired a profound knowledge of many of our problems, I experienced them and suffered because of them ...” (Letter of Oct. 11 1956).
In the autumn of 1956 he was sent to England to study English and, the following year, he was assigned to Japan. His dream of a direct engagement in apostolic activity was short-lived: he had just enough time to study the language before being appointed vice-rector of the community in Kobe and pastoral year in Kobayashi.
He was recalled to Italy in 1963, where he worked as rector in the High School community of Tavernerio (1963-66) and then, once again, as General Secretary (1966-71); thereafter, he was appointed Administrator of the General Direction and Rector of the Generalate (1971-83). From 1983 until 2002, he was the Administrator of the Procura in Parma and legal representative of the Congregation; he was also member of the Secretariat of Finances and the coordinator of the revision and updating of the Directory of Temporal Goods. At the end of his term as Administrator, he expressed his special gratitude to all the confreres who administer our finances: “I feel that I have enjoyed a fraternal and loyal rapport with each one of you. It was a pleasure for me to keep in contact with you: it was my way of being a missionary alongside you ... I am truly grateful for this” (March 5 2002).
Fr. G. Ferrari, in the funeral address, said: “Father Virginio was a convinced and serene Xaverian. His death deprives the Congregation of a faithful confrere, one who was a witness of its recent history, a living memory of these last fifty years in which he was always an attentive observer of events and people, a 'positive' man, capable of finding good and promoting it wherever it appeared, but also carefully attentive and understanding towards those who made mistakes”.
