Il 31 ottobre 2015, all’ospedale S. Bortolo di Vicenza, intorno alle 16,00, è morto P. Elio Cosma, stroncato da un tumore. Aveva 79 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Cittadella (Padova - Italia) il 23 ottobre 1936.
Entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza nel 1949. Percorse l’iter formativo allora vigente. Medie, Vicenza (1949-52); Ginnasio, Zelarino (1952-54); Noviziato, S. Pietro in Vincoli (1954-55); Prima Professione il 12 settembre 1955; Liceo, Desio (1955-58); Prefettato, Vicenza (1958-59; 61-62); Teologia, Parma (1959-61; 62-64). A Parma fu ordinato presbitero il 13 ottobre 1963.
Sempre apprezzato dai Superiori: “È un buon elemento per il suo amore alla vocazione, la sua salute e la resistenza alla fatica” (Ammissione alla Prima professione); “… impulsivo: tuttavia ammirevole nel dominarsi e nell’incanalare l’impulsività al bene… Ottimo lo spirito di pietà, superlativo lo spirito di sacrificio, a tutta prova la generosità” (Ammissione al Presbiterato).
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato alla Circoscrizione della Spagna. Aperta da appena due anni e quindi con tutti i problemi tipici degli inizi. Dalla sede per la comunità all’inculturazione, dall’economia alla scuola e la formazione. Per undici anni, dal 1964 al 1975, P. Elio fu impegnato nel ministero, nell’insegnamento e nella formazione a Araya-Alava, Guernica-Bizcaia, Pozuelo de Alarcon-Madrid e Pamplona.
Riuscì pure a conseguire la Licenza in teologia biblica alla pontificia università di Pamplona (1971). A proposito di titoli accademici, nel 1980 si licenziò in Antropologia applicata alla Missione presso la Pontificia Università Bolivariana di Bogotà-Colombia e nel 1985 in Filosofia all’Università Valle de Atemajac di Guadalajara-Messico.
Ma P. Elio desiderava la missione. Scriveva il 28 ottobre 1973: “Lei mi chiede se ho bisogno di qualche cosa; voglio essere sincero: ho urgente bisogno di andare in Missione…”
Con altri due confratelli fu destinato alla Colombia. Erano i primi Saveriani inviati in quel paese. Ebbero in cura una grande parrocchia a Buenaventura e, dal 1975 al 1980, P. Elio fu il Parroco e il Rettore. A un anno dall’arrivo in terra colombiana assicurava che “il presente mi assorbe… Non ho paura di nessuno per cui mi metto in tutti i buchi e, ovunque, trovo fratelli!” (26.9.76). Nella parrocchia non mancavano le strutture pastorali per cui poté privilegiare, come era suo desiderio, la catechesi nelle scuole (nel territorio della parrocchia sorgevano 7 plessi di elementari con circa settemila alunni), la visita ai malati almeno una volta al mese. Senza dimenticare “i più lontani che sono anche i più poveri e abbandonati. Non mi sento carismatico, però credo che bisognerebbe uscire da certi schemi e da certi castelli, per incarnare una chiesa povera con i poveri” (13.4.77). Scriveva anche: “Mi sto convincendo sempre più di essere nato al sacerdozio per fare il pastore” (26.9.76).
Ma i Superiori contavano su di lui per la formazione. Nel 1980 fu destinato al Messico dove rimase fino al 2010. Dal 1981 al 1986 fu rettore e formatore nella comunità della secondaria e preparatoria di San Juan del Rio. Dal 1986 al 1993 insegnò Filosofia a Guadalajara. Nell’occasione il Superiore Generale lo invitò a entrare più direttamente nella formazione: “Ne hai tutte le necessarie qualità: preparazione intellettuale ed esperienza, hai saggezza, hai forza”. E P. Elio ripeteva la sua difficoltà: ‘non sono adatto, sono troppo duro’. Effettivamente, persona responsabile, ordinata, metodica, prendeva sul serio la responsabilità affidatagli. Ed era esigente.
Dal 1993 al 2003 svolse la sua attività all’ ICO di Mazatlan: insegnante, animatore missionario, ministero, collaboratore di Radio Cultura, Superiore della comunità (1995-2001), Direttore della scuola (1995-2003). Il servizio messicano proseguì a Torreón come Rettore e animatore del Centro Giovanile Missionario (2003-07) e si concluse a Guadalajara (2007-10), insegnante di filosofia e Direttore Spirituale.
Nel 2010, per problemi di salute, rientrò in Italia. Ripresosi, fu destinato a Vicenza, Rettore della comunità. Trascorse l’ultimo periodo di attività a S. Pietro in Vincoli.
Elio ci ha lasciato un bilancio della sua esistenza: “nello sforzo di una dedizione autentica, ho cercato di vivere fin dall’inizio con entusiasmo l’immedesimazione nella cultura in cui mi trovavo… nelle brevi visite ‘italiane’ mi mantenevo ai margini delle situazioni: non mi riguardavano proprio; mi aspettava un’altra realtà, quella che consideravo la a mia” (23.9.10).

Fr. Elio Cosma died at the S. Bortolo hospital, in Vicenza, on 31 October 2015. Born in Cittadella (Padua, Italy) on 23 October 1936, he was 79 years old.
He joined the Institute at Vicenza in 1949 and completed the following formation program: junior high school at Vicenza (1949-52); senior high school at Zelarino (1952-54); Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (1954-55); First Profession on 12 September 1955; Lyceum at Desio (1955-58); Prefect at Vicenza (1958-59; 1961-62); Theology at Parma (1959-61; 1962-64). He was ordained priest in Parma on 13 October 1963.
The Superiors always thought highly of him: “His love for his vocation, his health and stamina make him a good candidate” (presentation to First Profession); “… he is impulsive, yet he is admirable in his efforts to control himself and channel this impulsivity towards good purposes … He shows excellent piety, has an outstanding spirit of sacrifice and is as generous as can be” (Presentation to the Priesthood).
After his ordination he was assigned to the Circumscription of Spain, which had been founded two years previously and, consequently, was dealing with typical teething problems: a house for the community, inculturation, finances, school and formation. For eleven years (1964-75), Fr. Elio worked in the ministry, teaching and formation at Araya-Alava, Guernica-Bizcaia, Pozuelo de Alarcon-Madrid and Pamplona.
In the academic field, he obtained a Masters in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical University of Pamplona, Spain (1971); a Masters in Anthropology applied to the Mission at the Pontifical Bolivarian University of Bogotà, Colombia (1980) and a Masters in Philosophy at the University Valle de Atemajac, Guadalajara, Mexico (1985).
Yet Fr. Elio wanted to go to the missions. On 28 October 1973 he wrote: “You ask me if I need anything and must tell you that my most pressing need is to leave for the missions …”
He was assigned to Colombia with another two confreres and they were the first Xaverians to be sent to that country. They took over a large parish in Buenaventura and, from 1975 until 1980, Fr. Elio served as Parish Priest and Rector. One year after his arrival in Colombia, he wrote “the present absorbs all my time and energy… I am not afraid of anyone, so I go everywhere and everywhere I find brothers and sisters!” (26.9.76). In the parish there is no lack of pastoral structures and this enabled him to give priority to what mattered to him most: catechesis in the schools (in the parish territory there were 7 small primary schools that catered for a total of seven thousand pupils) and visits to the sick at least once a month. Without forgetting “the far-away people who are also the poorest and most abandoned. I am by no means charismatic, but I do believe we must leave behind certain schemas and castles in the air and incarnate a poor Church with the poor” (13.4.77). He also wrote: “I am ever more convinced that I was born to be a priest” (26.9.76).
However, the Superiors wanted him to work in formation. In 1980 he was assigned to Mexico and he remained there until 2010. From 1981 until 1986, he served as rector and formator in the community of the secondary and preparatory school in San Juan del Rio. From 1986 until 1993, he taught Philosophy in Guadalajara. On that occasion, the Superior General asked him to take on a more direct role in formation: “You have all the necessary qualities: intellectual preparation and experience, you have both wisdom and strength”. Fr. Elio once again expressed his difficulty: ‘I am not suitable, I am too harsh.' He was truly a responsible and methodical person who took seriously any responsibility that was entrusted to him. And he was demanding too.
From 1993 until 2003 he worked at the ICO of Mazatlan as teacher and missionary animator; he worked in the pastoral ministry and collaborated with Radio Cultura; he also served as Superior of the community (1995-2001) and Director of the school (1995-2003). His service in Mexico continued at Torreón, where he was Rector and animator of the Missionary Youth Center (2003-2007) and it ended at Guadalajara (2007-2010), where he taught Philosophy and was Spiritual Director.
In 2010, health problems forced him to return to Italy. When he recovered, he was assigned to Vicenza as rector of the community. He spent the last period of his activity at S. Pietro in Vincoli.
Fr. Elio thus summed up his life: “in aiming for true dedication, I have tried to live from the very beginning with enthusiasm and fitting into the culture in which I found myself … in my brief visits to Italy I kept myself on the sidelines of what was happening: it was no concern of mine; I belonged to another reality and I looked upon that as my own” (23.9.10).
