In un incidente d’auto sulla strada di montagna che da Lonno scende a Nembro, sabato 13.8.2011, intorno alle 16,15, è morto il P. Luigi Arnoldi: all’altezza di una curva a sinistra l’auto, guidata dall’amico Ing. Gianfranco Zanchi, ha proseguito diritta abbattendo la barriera di protezione e precipitando nel vuoto. Un volo di cinque metri. E i due morti sul colpo.
P. Luigi aveva 65 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Osio Sotto (Bergamo) il 10.8.1946. Apparteneva alla Regione Saveriana del Burundi e ricopriva l’incarico di Rettore e Formatore degli aspiranti saveriani dello studentato filosofico di Bujumbura.
P. Luigi era una vocazione adulta. Lavorava in una panetteria, ed era impegnato nell’oratorio parrocchiale. Esperienza, questa, che gli fece scoprire «la gioia di rendere più serena e più umana la vita dei poveri … [per cui] … con l’aiuto di chi mostrava d’avermi capito, decisi di intraprendere la strada del sacerdozio missionario» (Notiziario parrocchiale. Brembate Sotto, Settembre 1976).
Entrò tra i Saveriani a Desio nel 1965. Questo il percorso formativo di P. Luigi fino alla ordinazione: Desio (65-68) Medie; Nizza Monferrato (68-69) Noviziato e Prima Professione; Desio (69-72) Istituto magistrale; Parma (72-77) Propedeutica e Teologia. Ordinato presbitero il 3.10.1976.
A questo punto il panettiere di Brembate Sotto poteva affermare, come si era espresso nella domanda di ammissione alla Professione Perpetua il 5.10.75: «sono pronto a rispondere in modo totale alla chiamata di Dio ad amarlo sopra ogni cosa e a dare il mio contributo perché in mezzo agli uomini, specialmente i più poveri, cresca il suo Regno di giustizia e di pace».
Essendo vocazione adulta fu subito destinato alla missione del Burundi. Passò due anni a Parigi (77-79): fu il responsabile della comunità, studiò il francese e si iscrisse all’Institut Catholique de Paris che frequentò anche nell’anno accademico 93/94, conseguendo la Maitrîse en Théologie (Spécialisation en Pastorale Catéchétique).
Nell’agosto 1979 raggiunse Bujumbura e affrontò con grande serietà lo studio del Kirundi, facendo capire che, come scrisse un confratello, non viveva come uno di passaggio in Africa.
I primi incarichi pastorali furono: Viceparroco a Minago (80-82) e poi Parroco a Rumeza (82-83). Ma furono anche gli unici di quel periodo iniziale: il 15 ottobre 1983 fu espulso dal Burundi. Un’esperienza bruciante che divenne “il suo deserto” nel quale incontrava Dio e scopriva la propria identità: «La vigilanza nel dire e nel fare non basta, frequentemente ci scappiamo di mano e allora le reazioni altrui ci dicono che siamo fuori strada» (9.5.98).
Dall’84 all’89 lavorò in Congo, cappellano e poi parroco a Mwenga (84-89). Anche in questa occasione si fece apprezzare per il suo impegno nell’apprendimento del kiswahili e un concreto interesse per la cultura lega.
Nel 90 si rese disponibile per l’avvicendamento: fu rettore della casa di Alzano (90-93) e animatore nella comunità di Udine (94-97). «Preparato e competente… interventi nelle assemblee, stimolanti. Valido operaio del Vangelo…» (Saluto della Regione italiana, 11.9.97).
Due mesi dopo ritornò in Burundi: impegnato come docente nel Seminario interdiocesano di Gitega; Vice Sup. Regionale (99-02); Superiore Regionale (02-08). Dal 2008 venne sempre più coinvolto nella formazione. Un confratello stimato dalla chiesa locale: «punto di riferimento per tutti noi e per la chiesa burundese» (P. Venant); «un educatore modello, sospinto da una grande bontà, dalla gratuità e dalla fedeltà» (Abbé Georges Bizimana, Rettore del Seminario di Gitega).
P. Luigi era con vinto che la paternità di Dio è il fondamento di una vita riuscita: «Il rimanere dentro l’esperienza della paternità di Dio in Gesù, mi permetterà di diventare a mia volta segno di questa paternità divina per tutti coloro che mi stanno accanto» (19.7.09).

Fr. Luigi Arnoldi died in a car accident near Nembro (Bergamo, Italy) on Aug. 13, 2011.
Born in Osio Sotto (Bergamo) on Aug. 10 1946, he was 65 years old. At the time of his death he was a member of the Xaverian Region of Burundi, where he was Rector and Formator of the Xaverian philosophy students in Bujumbura.
Fr. Luigi was an adult vocation. Previously, he had worked in a baker’s shop and assisted in the local parish. This experience helped him to discover «the joy of making the life of the poor more serene and more human… therefore, with the help of those who understood me, I decided to train for the missionary priesthood» (Parish bulletin, Brembate Sotto, Sept. 1976).
He joined the Xaverians in Desio in 1965. These are the formation stages he passed through on his way to the priesthood: Desio (1965-68), High School: Nizza Monferrato (1968-69) Novitiate and First Profession; Desio (1959-72) teachers’ training collage; Parma (1972-77) Theology. He was ordained priest on Oct. 3, 1976.
At this point, the baker from Brembate Sotto could well say, as he wrote in his application for Final Profession on Oct. 5: «I am ready to respond totally to God’s call, to love him above all things and to give my contribution so that God’s Kingdom of justice and peace may grow among people, especially among the poorest».
Since he was an adult vocation, he was assigned immediately to the mission of Burundi. He spent two years in Paris (1977-79): he was the superior of the community, studied French and enrolled at the Institut Catholique de Paris which he also attended during the academic year 1993-94, obtaining the Maitrise en Théologie (Spécialization en Pastorale Catéchétique).
He arrived in Bujumbura in August 1979, and his serious application to the study of the Kirundi language clearly showed, as one confrere wrote, that he was not just passing through Africa.
His first pastoral assignments were: assistant priest at Minago (1980-82) and then aprish priest at Tumeza (1982-83). On Oct. 15 1983 he was expelled from Burundi. It was a crushing experience that became “his desert” in which he encountered God and discovered his identity: «Vigilance over words and actions is not enough, often we get out of hand and the reactions of others tells us that we are mistaken» (May 9, 1998).
From 1984 until 1989 he worked in Congo as chaplain and then parish priest at Mwenga (1984-89). Here, too, he was admired for his commitment to learning the Kiswahili language and his concrete interest in the Lega culture.
In 1990 he made himself available for rotation: he was rector of the community of Alzano (1990-93) and animator in the community of Udine (1994-97). «He was well prepared and competent… he made interesting intervention in the assemblies. A valid worker of the Gospel…» (from the goodbye greetings of the Italian Region, Sept. 11, 1997).
Two months later he returned to Burundi: he served as teacher in the inter-diocesan seminary of Gitega; Vice-Regional Superior (1999-2002); Regional Superior (2002-08). From 2008 he was more and more involved in formation.
He was very respected by the local Church: «a reference point for all of us and for the Burundian Church» (Fr. Venant); «a model formator, motivated by great kindness, gratuitousness and fidelity» (Abbé Georges Bizimana, Rector of the Seminary of Gitega).
Fr. Luigi was convinced that the paternity of God is the foundation of a well-lived life: «Remaining grounded in the experience of God’s paternity allows me to become a sign of this divine paternity for those who live alongside me » (July 19, 2009). May he rest in Peace.
