STANISLAO PIROLA
Il 30 dicembre 2015, alle 0.27, all’Ospedale del Cuore di Londrina (Brasile) è morto il P. Stanislao Pirola per un tumore da poco scoperto. Aveva 81 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Trezzo sull’Adda (Milano – Italia) il giorno 8.2.1934.
Proveniva da famiglia ‘ottima’, così nella presentazione al Noviziato; quindici figli dei quali quattro morti prematuramente, due suore delle Poverelle, un Gesuita e un Saveriano.
«L’ambiente in cui sono stato educato e l’esempio di mio fratello che entrava nella Compagnia di Gesù, mi misero in cuore il desiderio di farmi sacerdote… Venne un missionario a scuola e il 2.9.1945 entrai nella comunità saveriana di Pedrengo …».
Cinque anni più tardi, alla vigilia del Noviziato, ribadiva la sua decisione: «La strada che liberamente ho scelto e volontariamente voglio seguire è questa e quindi pensieri diversi non li seguo, anzi li disprezzo. Per me c’è solo questo desiderio: la vita religiosa/missionaria. Tutto il resto è nulla» (Esame della vocazione). Eppure il percorso formativo era stato tutt’altro che agevole. Si era nell’immediato dopo guerra, alle prese con difficoltà e problemi di ogni genere. Tra i Saveriani la classe di P. Lao dovrebbe avere il primato dei cambi di sede durante le Medie: I e II Media a Pedrengo (45-47); III Media a Zelarino (47-48); IV Ginnasio a Piacenza (48-49); V Ginnasio a Zelarino (49-50).
Fece il Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli. Il 12.10.1951 emise la Prima Professione. Proseguì quindi l’iter formativo saveriano a Desio, Liceo Classico (51-54); Vicenza, prefetto assistente (54-55); Piacenza, I-III Teologia (55-58); Parma, IV Teologia. Il 9.11.1959 fu ordinato presbitero nel salone della Casa Madre, ora Museo Cinese Etnografico. «Ha una buona sufficienza in tutto; è regolare, ordinato, sa organizzare le sue cose. Penso riuscirà a svolgere bene l’ufficio che gli verrà assegnato, preferibilmente in missione» (Presentazione al Presbiterato).
Dopo l'ordinazione prestò il suo servizio alla Congregazione in Italia, ministero, insegnante e economo a Brescia, ministero a Pegli.
Nel 1973 fu destinato al Brasile Sud e potè, finalmente, operare nella pastorale parrocchiale: Collaboratore nella parrocchia S. M. de Fatima di Londrina (’73-’75), Parroco di Vere (’75-’78).
Fu un’esperienza indimenticabile vivere «la creatività e il fermento della chiesa brasiliana quando nacquero e si svilupparono le “comunità di base”, vero lievito nella massa ecclesiale. Ispirate ai documenti del Concilio e delle ultime Assemblee delle chiese americane. queste comunità cercavano di vivere la vita evangelica nel modo più fedele possibile allo spirito della comunità cristiana dei primi tempi.
La Parola di Dio era accolta con generosità, discussa assieme ai laici che poi, con l’aiuto dei presbiteri, cercavano di trasferirla nella vita pratica con la catechesi e con le opere a sfondo caritativo e sociale» (MS ottobre ’85).
L’esperienza fu relativamente breve. Nel 1978 gli fu chiesto di servire la missione come Economo Regionale del Brasile (78-84) e poi dall’85 all’88, economo della casa di Zelarino in Italia.
Nell’88 ritornò in Brasile e al lavoro pastorale a Piraju, Vista Alegre. Nel 2000 riebbe l’incarico di Economo Regionale e due anni più tardi fu chiamato a Parma, Procuratore delle missioni (2002-2008).
Infine l’ultima tappa brasiliana, parroco a Melo Viana e Coronel Fabriciano (2008-2011), a São Geraldo e nuovamente a Coronel Fabriciano (2011-2015).
«P. Lao – è la testimonianza di P. Gabriele Guarnieri - sapeva unire la preghiera con l’azione, la fede con l’economia; mostrava amore per la nostra Congregazione e passione per la missione ad gentes; nelle varie attività pastorali si rivelava deciso e generoso. Amava quello che faceva e, pur avendo più di 80 anni, aveva sempre un grande entusiasmo e una voglia costante di progettare per il futuro».

Fr. Stanislao Pirola died of cancer, on 30 December 2015, in hospital at Londrina (Brazil). Born in Trezzo sull’Adda (Milan, Italy), on 8 February 1934, he was 81 years old.
The report presenting him to Novitiate said he came from an ‘excellent’ family of fifteen children, four of whom died prematurely, two sisters joined the Poverelle Sisters, one became a Jesuit and Stanislao became a Xaverian.
«The atmosphere in which I was raised, and the example of my brother who joined the Company of Jesus, made me want to be a priest … After the visit of a missionary priest to our school, I joined the Xaverian community of Pedrengo on 2 September 1945 …».
Five years later, he reasserted his decision before entering the Novitiate, he reasserted his decision: «I have chosen to follow this path freely willingly and I have no intention of doing anything else with my life. I have only one desire: the religious/missionary life. All else counts as nothing ». Yet his formation journey had been anything but easy. Those were the years immediately after the Second World War and people were struggling with all sorts of problems. Fr. Stanislao’s class set the record for the greatest number of transfers during the high school period: the first two years were spent at Pedrengo (1945-47); third year at Zelarino (1947-48); fourth year at Piacenza (1948-49) and fifth year at Zelarino (1949-50).
He did his Novitiate at San Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 12 October 1951. He then studied at Desio (1951-54), served as Prefect in Vicenza (1954-55), completed the first three years of Theology at Piacenza (1955-58) and the fourth Theology at Parma. He was ordained priest in the Mother House, Parma, on 9 November 1959, in what is now the Chinese and Ethnographic Museum. «His overall performance is good; he is disciplined, orderly and well-organized. I believe he will do well in any task assigned to him, preferably in the missions » (Presentation to the Priesthood).
After his ordination he worked in Italy, in the ministry, as a teacher and Treasurer at Brescia, and in the ministry at Pegli.
He was assigned to South Brazil in 1973, where he worked in parish pastoral ministry as assistant in the parish of S. M. de Fatima, Londrina (1973-75) and Parish priest in Vere (1975-78).
It was an unforgettable experience to live «the creativity and the enthusiasm of the Brazilian Church when the “basic communities”, the true yeast in the ecclesial dough, were coming to life and developing. Inspired by the documents of the Council and the Assemblies of the American churches, these communities tried to faithfully embody the Gospel just like the earliest Christian communities.
The Word of God was welcomed generously, discussed together with lay people and then, with the help of the priests, they tried to apply it to practical life through catechesis and works of a charitable and social nature » (Missionari Saveriani, October 1985).
The experience was a relatively short one. In 1978 he was asked to serve the mission as Regional Treasurer of Brazil (1978-84) and then, from 1985 until 1988, he served as treasurer of the house of Zelarino in Italy.
He returned to Brazil and to pastoral work in Piraju, Vista Alegre, in 1988. He was appointed Regional Tresurer once again in 2000 and, two years later, he was called to Parma as Procurator of the Missions (2002-2008).
Finally, the last phase of his life in Brazil, as parish priest in Melo Viana and Coronel Fabriciano (2008-2011), at São Geraldo and once again at Coronel Fabriciano (2011-2015).
Fr. Gabriele Guarnieri says of him: «Fr. Stanislao combined prayer and action, faith and finances; he loved our Congregation and was passionate about the mission ad gentes; he was resolute and generous in the various pastoral services. He loved what he did and, although he was more than 80 years old, he always showed great enthusiasm and a constant desire to plan for the future ».
