P. Battista Barbeno

Il 7 aprile 2012, Sabato Santo, intorno alle 16,00 a Parma in Casa Madre è morto P. Battista Barbeno. Una morte inattesa perché, rientrato dal Camerun per problemi di salute l'8 marzo, stava in qualche modo reagendo alle cure. Aveva 75 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Travagliato (Brescia) il 13.09.1936.
P. Barbeno fu una vocazione adulta. Cresciuto in una famiglia buona e religiosa, frequentatore dell'Oratorio parrocchiale, iscritto all'Azione Cattolica conobbe i Saveriani attraverso il suo curato che lo fece incontrare con P. Mombelli. Questi lo presentò al Rettore della casa per le vocazioni adulte di Nizza Monferrato, dove entrò il 24.10.1957 per diventare sacerdote missionario
Percorse quindi regolarmente le tappe della formazione saveriana: le medie inferiori e il ginnasio a Nizza (1957-1961); Noviziato ancora a Nizza (1961-1962) con la Prima Professione a Parma il 3.10.62; liceo classico a Desio il primo anno e poi a Tavernerio (1962-1965); Teologia a Parma (1965-1969) con l'ordinazione presbiterale il 13.10.1968.
P. Barbeno ha vissuto con grande serietà e impegno gli anni della formazione come si può rilevare dalle presentazioni richieste in alcuni passaggi dell'iter formativo. «Sente la vocazione come una chiamata alla più completa dedizione di sè al Signore e alle anime, e a tale ideale egli sinceramente aspira» (Presentazione Prima Professione).
«Integrista nell'osservanza religiosa, stenta a capire e tanto meno a tollerare comportamenti incoerenti. Non nasconde la sua disapprovazione che esprime … opportune et importune» (Presentazione Professione Perpetua).
«In ogni modo si sforza di intervenire in questo in maniera molto edificante. Esercita la carità verso gli ammalati con una particolare dedizione. Molte prove e dolori in famiglia lo hanno purificato non poco. Sente il richiamo della vita interiore e dell'apostolato e ci si dedica con grande convinzione» (Presentazione Ministeri ordinati).
Nel 1969, conclusi gli studi di teologia, fu destinato alla missione del Congo: fece un anno di francese a Parigi e il 13 settembre del 1970 era in Congo, pronto a servire la chiesa che è ad Uvira. Il suo primo campo di lavoro fu Mwenga (71-73) poi, nell'ordine, Kiliba (73-78), Uvira cattedrale (78-80); Kidote (80-86); Luvungi (86-89). Nei 19 anni congolesi ha lavorato nella pastorale parrocchiale. E ne era soddisfatto: .«Sono contento d'essere prete e missionario, di essere qui tra la mia gente … sicuro che Dio sarà fedele come sempre» (Kiliba, 14.9.76). Molto attento alla vita fraterna in comunità, "confratelli cari e desiderati, proprio perché doni del Signore"(Luvungi, 28.9.88). Aveva il gusto della programmazione, collaborava volentieri. Non lo spaventavano le difficoltà nel lavoro. Aveva un'attenzione particolare per la formazione dei giovani e le vocazioni.
Nel 1989 chiese un periodo di riposo/aggiornamento: «Sono 19 anni ininterrotti che sono ad Uvira, di cui 12 passati con le piaghe alle gambe … Sento il bisogno fisico-psichico e spirituale di [una sosta]» (Luvungi, 14.1.89). Fu impegnato in Italia, come animatore missionario, nella comunità di Udine. Dopo cinque anni, nel 1994, ritornò in missione in Camerun dove servì la chiesa locale e la congregazione a Douala-Oyack (94-01): pastorale parrocchiale, Rettore della comunità; Douala-Ndog Passi (01-03): viceparroco; Bafoussam-Maison Regional (03-09) economo, animatore; Parma (09-11) in cura; Bafoussam/Bamenzi-Nefa (6.10.11 – 8.3.12).
P. Barbeno, come scrisse da Luvungi nel 1987, non aveva dubbi: «Non sarà il volume di lavoro fatto, le opere realizzate, i progetti portati a termine, il successo ottenuto che mi renderanno immortale, ma Colui per il quale e con il quale ho lavorato e speso la mia vita. Una sola gioia mi accompagnerà nel tratto finale della mia vita, quella di lasciarmi io stesso conquistare da Lui, perché tutti coloro che incontrerò possano dire: "In questo missionario ho scoperto il volto di Dio". E questo mi basta».

Fr. Battista Barbeno died in the Mother House, Parma, on 7 April 2012. His death was unexpected because he seemed to be responding well to treatment for the health problems that had forced him to return from Cameroon on 8 March. Born in Travagliato (Brescia, Italy), on 13 September 1936, he was 75 years old.
Fr. Barbeno was an adult vocation. He grew up in a good religious family, he attended the parish youth center and was a member the Catholic Action movement. He got to know the Xaverians when the curate of his parish put him in touch with Fr. Mombelli, who presented him to the Rector of the House for adult vocations at Nizza Monferrato. On 24 October 1957, he joined that community to become a missionary priest.
He completed the following stages of the Xaverian formation program: high school at Nizza (1957-61); Novitiate at Nizza (1961-62), with First Profession in Parma on 3 October 1962; he then continued his school studies at Desio for one year (1962-63) and then Tavernerio (1963-65) before moving to Parma for Theology (1965-1969). He was ordained priest on 13 October 1968.
Fr. Barbeno lived the years of his formation with great determination and commitment, as can be seen from the reports that were made at various stages of the formation program. «He feels his vocation as a call to the most complete self-dedication to the Lord and to souls, and he sincerely aspires to this ideal» (Presentation to First Profession).
«He is intransigent in his religious observance and he finds it difficult to understand and tolerate inconsistent behaviors. He does not conceal his disapproval, which he expresses … opportune et importune» (Presentation to Final Profession). «His efforts to improve in this area have been very edifying. He practices charity towards the sick with special dedication. Many trials and sufferings endured by his family have purified him a great deal. He feels the call to the interior life and the apostolate and dedicates himself to them with great conviction» (Presentation to the ordained Ministries).
In 1969, at the end of his theology studies, he was assigned to the mission of the Congo. He studied French for one year in Paris and arrived in the Congo on 13 September 1970, ready to serve the Church in Uvira. His first work field was Mwenga (1971-73), then Kiliba (1973-78), the cathedral of Uvira (1978-80); Kidote (1980-86); Luvungi (1986-89).
During his 19 years in the Congo, he worked in parish pastoral ministry and he was very satisfied with this experience: «I am happy to be a priest and a missionary, to be here among my people … sure that God will always be faithful» (Kiliba, 14.9.76). He was very attentive to the fraternal life in community, “my beloved confreres, because they are gifts from the Lord ” (Luvungi, 28.9.88). He enjoyed planning and he was a willing collaborator. He was not put off by difficulties in work. He showed a special attention to the formation of young people and vocations.
In 1989 he asked for a period of rest and aggiornamento: «I have been in Uvira for 19 years without interruption and for twelve of these years I have been afflicted with sores on my legs … I feel the physical, psychological and spiritual need for a break» (Luvungi, 14.1.89). He served in Italy as missionary animator in the community of Udine.
Five years later, in 1994, he returned to the missions, this time to Cameroon, where he served the local Church and the Congregation at Douala-Oyack (1994-2001): in the parish pastoral ministry and as Rector of the community; Douala-Ndog Passi (2001-03): assistant priest; Bafoussam-Maison Regional (2003-09) as treasurer and animator; Parma (2009-11) for medical treatment; Bafoussam/Bamenzi-Nefa (6.10.2011 – 8.3.2012).
In 1987, Fr. Barbeno wrote from Luvungi: «It will not be the volume of work I have done, the projects I have completed or my success that will make me immortal, but the One for whom and with whom I have worked and spent my life. One joy will accompany me in the final stage of my life: I allowed Him to conquer me, so that everyone I meet can say: “I discovered the face of God in this missionary”. That is enough for me».
