A Udine nella Casa di cura “Città di Udine”, alle 04,30 del 17.3.2008, lunedì santo, è morto il P. Roberto Dal Forno, consumato dal tumore, scoperto da appena un mese, ma già in metastasi. In maggio avrebbe compiuto 62 anni, essendo nato a Marano Lagunare (Udine) il 13.5.1946.
P. Roberto entrò nella Casa di Udine nel 1958. «A influire molto sulla mia vocazione –scriveva nel 1964– è stato il servizio all’altare. Non andavo a servir la S. Messa tutti i giorni, ma ci andavo spesso». «È un giovanetto normale e completo –attestava il suo Rettore l’1.7.61– : buona pietà, sufficiente intelligenza, ottimo impegno nello studio e nella disciplina. Candido e di apertura cristallina. Ottima promessa di riuscita».
Ha percorso con profitto l’iter formativo saveriano allora vigente: 58-61, Medie a Udine; 61-63, Ginnasio a Zelarino; 63-64 Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, con la Prima Professione il 3.10.64; 64-67, Liceo a Tavernerio; 67-68, Propedeutica a Parma; 68-70, Prefettato a Vicenza; 70-74 Teologia a Parma, dove fu ordinato Presbitero il 30.9.1973.
Al termine di questo percorso formativo P. Roberto si presentava con una personalità che si distingueva, come risulta dalla presentazione alla Professione Perpetua (1.11.72), «per il temperamento ricco di volontà e di tenacia; per il suo impegno costante nell’applicazione allo studio; per la sua sensibilità al richiamo del dovere e della vita cristiana; per la buona intelligenza…».
Dal 1974 al 1980 lavorò come Promotore vocazionale nella comunità di Udine. Attività non facile anche perché in quegli anni aveva inizio la crisi e il ripensamento dell’animazione vocazionale. Scriveva il 19.5.78: «Le cose vanno come devono andare… ossia come Dio vuole… umanamente parlando non sempre vanno bene… Per fortuna che il Signore è grande e ci fa andare avanti, nonostante noi. E questo è il bello ed è per questo che tiro avanti con serenità e con ottimismo».
Nel 1980 fu destinato alla missione del Burundi, che raggiunse nel 1981, dopo lo studio del Francese a Parigi. Fu vice parroco a Minago e Matara (1981-1986). Nel 1986 –sono gli anni della presidenza Baganza– non gli fu rinnovato il visa, e P. Roberto passò nella vicina Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Vi rimase dieci anni (1986-1996), sempre impegnato nella pastorale: a Mboko (1987-1988), Bunyakiri (1988), Cimpunda (1988-1992), Baraka (1993-1996) e, infine, Bunyakiri, ma per pochi giorni perché alla fine d’ottobre ‘96, per l’arrivo di forze d’invasione, dovette fuggire con gli altri confratelli di missione: una drammatica fuga di tre settimane, nella foresta del Kivu.
Nel 1997 fu destinato alla Regione italiana: fu animatore missionario a Cagliari (97-00) e, dal 2000, animatore missionario ed economo nella comunità di Udine. Era convinto che «assicurare nuove forze apostoliche alla missione e animare missionariamente le chiese locali è nostro carisma quanto l’annuncio diretto nelle cosiddette missioni» (Lettera di destinazione 3.3.97). Nello stesso tempo però manteneva viva la speranza di tornare a lavorare in Africa. Nel 2004 chiese espressamente ai Superiori «di poter ritornare in missione: ad gentes, ad extra».
P. Roberto ci lascia il ricordo di un confratello generoso e disponibile, così come scrive nella lettera al Superiore Generale, in occasione della prima destinazione alla fine della teologia: «Le dichiaro la mia disponibilità a qualsiasi decisione nei miei riguardi… In quanto ai miei ‘talenti’ questa la mia situazione: non sono ‘forte’ in nessun campo, però mi arrangio come meglio posso; mi intendo un po’ di musica e di sport; so un po’ di tedesco; mi piace molto la pesca, le reti, il mare: ho imparato da mio papà a pescare. Non ho doti eccezionali, però quando prendo un impegno mi sforzo di portarlo a termine. Nei miei limiti e nelle mie possibilità potenziate dall’aiuto del Signore, mi sforzerò di fare e di seguire le sue decisioni» (5.4.1973). Riposi in pace.

Fr. Roberto Dal Forno died in the clinic “Città di Udine” (Udine, Italy), on March 17 2008, of cancer,which had been diagnosed the previous month and was already in metastasis.
Born in Marano Lagunare (Udine) on May 13 1946, he was almost 62 years old.
Fr. Roberto joined the Xaverians in Udine in 1958. In 1964, he wrote: «service at the altar had a great influence on my vocation. I served Mass often, though not every day». His rector wrote: «He is a normal young man: good piety, sufficient intelligence, excellent commitment to study and disciplined. Candid and transparent. An excellent and promising candidate» (July 1 1961).
He completed the Xaverian formation program with good results: 1958-61, junior high school at Udine; 1961-63, high school at Zelarino; 1963-64, Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, with First profession on Oct. 3 1964; 1964-67, Liceo at Tavernerio; 1967-68, the Propaedeutics stage at Parma; 1968-70, Prefect at Vicenza; 1970-74 Theology at Parma, where he was ordained Priest on Sept. 30 1973.
At the end of this formation program, Fr. Roberto possessed a character that stood out «for his rich temperament in will and tenacity; his constant commitment to application in study; his attention to duty and the Christian life; his good intelligence…» (Presentation to Final Profession, Nov. 1 1972).
From 1974 until 1980 he worked as vocation promoter in the community of Udine. This was not an easy activity at that time because vocation promotion was experiencing a period of crisis. On May 19 1978, he wrote: «Things are going as they should…or, rather, as God wishes … from a human point of view they do not always go well… Thankfully, God is good and takes care of things, in spite of us. This is a wonderful thing and it helps me to persevere with serenity and optimism».
In 1980 he was assigned to the mission in Burundi and he arrived there in 1981 after studying French in Paris. He served as assistant priest in Minago and Matara (1981-1986). In 1986 – during the presidency of Baganza – his visa was not renewed and Fr. Roberto moved to the nearby Democratic Republic of Congo. He remained there for ten years (1986-1996), working in the pastoral ministry: at Mboko (1987-1988), Bunyakiri (1988), Cimpunda (1988-1992), Baraka (1993-1996) and, finally, Bunyakiri, where he only remained a few days because the arrival of invading troops at the end of October 1996 forced him to flee with the other confreres: their dramatic escape thorough the forests of the Kivu lasted three weeks.
In 1997 he was assigned to the Italian Region, where he served as missionary animator in Cagliari (1997-2000) and, from 2000, missionary animator and treasurer in the community of Udine. He was convinced that «the recruitment of new apostolic personnel for the mission and the missionary animation of the local churches is our charism just as much as the direct proclamation in the so called missions » (Letter of assignment, March 3 1997). At the same time, however, he kept alive the hope of returning to Africa. In 2004 he expressly asked the Superiors «to be allowed to return to the mission: ad gentes, ad extra».
Fr. Roberto leaves us with memories of a generous and available confrere, as can be seen in the letter he wrote to the Superior General on the occasion of his first assignment at the end of Theology: «I declare my availability for whatever decision is taken concerning me…As far as my ‘talents’ are concerned, this is my situation: I am not ‘strong’ in any field, but I do my best; I have some notion of music and sport; I know a little German; I like fishing and the sea very much: my father taught me to fish. I have no exceptional qualities, however when I accept a commitment I am determined to see it through. With all my limits and potential, and with the help of God, I shall strive to fulfill your decisions» (April 5 1973).

A 04h30, du lundi 17 mars 2008, à l’Hôpital d’Udine (Italie), est décédé le père Roberto Dal Forno. Il était hospitalisé depuis le mois de février dernier quand on lui a diagnostiqué un cancer déjà généralisé. Il avait 61 ans.
Le père Roberto entra chez les Missionnaires Xavériens à Udine (Italie) à l’âge de 12 ans, le 03.10.1958. Il fut ordonné prêtre à Parme le 30.09.1973. Après l’ordination, il travailla pendant 6 ans à la maison d’accueil des aspirants xavériens d’Udine (1974-1980). Il fut ensuite affecté à la mission du Burundi où il a travaillé à Minago (Bururi) et Matara (Bujumbura) comme vicaire (13/09/1981-01/10/1986). Après l’expulsion des confrères du Burundi, au temps du président Bagaza, il passa au Congo, le 11.10.1986 où il rendit service pendant 10 ans dans les missions de Mboko (1987-1988), Bunyakiri (Bukavu 1988), Cimpunda (Bukavu 1988-1992), Baraka (Uvira 1993-1996) et, enfin, Bunyakiri, d’où il dut s’échapper, avec ses confrères, à l’arrivée de l’armée d’invasion fin octobre 1996, parcourant la forêt pendant trois semaines. Il n’était pas rentré au Congo depuis ces événements.
Depuis 1997 il faisait partie de la Région Xavérienne d’Italie et résidait dans la communauté de Cagliari (1996-2000) et d’Udine, où il était engagé dans l’animation missionnaire et dans les relations avec les bienfaiteurs. Il soignait particulièrement les relations avec les familles des xavériens originaires du diocèse d’Udine, en les rassemblant une fois par mois pour une rencontre de prière et un partage. Il cultivait aussi de bonnes relations avec les abbés du diocèse avec qui il collaborait pour l’animation missionnaire et le ministère pastoral depuis le début de son ordination. Le père Dominique Meneguzzi écrit à son sujet : Il était très connu par les prêtres et par les gens. Son tempérament serein et accueillant fascinait petits et grands. On ne soupçonne pas toujours le travail intense que fait un missionnaire sur le terrain. Le père Roberto nous a laissé des notes très intéressantes où il décrit sa vie quotidienne à la mission de Baraka (Uvira). En voici un extrait.
Chaque missionnaire avait son service. Le curé, à l’époque le père Mazzocchin, recevait au bureau les paroissiens pour écouter leurs difficultés et arranger les différents problèmes de gestion des personnes. L’économe (c’était moi) recevait vers 8h deux ou trois ouvriers qui travaillaient à la mission : le cuisinier, un menuisier et un factotum. Avec eux, nous prenions connaissance des travaux à commencer ou à compléter. Parfois c’était la toiture d’une école, ou des bancs à arranger ou quelques chaises, etc. Mais il y avait aussi des travaux plus consistants. Par exemple, la première pluie torrentielle, en octobre 1994, avait détruit le grand caniveau qui délimitait la mission avec les cases voisines. Il s’agissait de réparer 400 mètres de caniveau, creuser, débarrasser les arbres, les feuilles et la saleté pour éviter que de dégâts ultérieurs soient causés par les pluies successives. Tout cela était exécuté soigneusement à la main, c’est à dire avec des pioches, des bêches, des houes, des brouettes etc. Vers midi, on déjeunait. Les ouvriers faisaient leur pause jusqu’à 14h ou 14h30 : cela dépendait aussi des journées, plus ou moins chaudes et humides. On reprenait donc le travail jusqu’à 17h. Puis, tous à la maison; et au revoir au lendemain. Sauf le cuisinier qui devait préparer le dîner. Nous, les missionnaires, nous dînions vers 19h et à 21h, toutes nos lumières étaient déjà éteintes.
Que l’âme de ce fidèle et généreux serviteur de l’Evangile repose en paix.

Je ne suis « expert » en aucun domaine, mais je me débrouille tant bien que mal ; je m’y connais un peu dans la musique et dans le sport ; je sais un peu d’allemand ; j’aime beaucoup la pêche, les filets et la mer : j’ai hérité cette passion de mon père.
Je n’ai pas de qualités exceptionnelles, mais quand je prends un engagement je m’efforce de le porter à terme. Dans mes limites et selon mes possibilités, avec la puissance de l’aide divine, je tâcherai d’accomplir et de suivre les décisions des Supérieurs. (Texte du P.
