1943 - 2022

Domenica 17 aprile 2022, alle ore 3.45 del mattino (ore in Bangladesh), è deceduto presso l’Hospital Square di Dhaka (Bangladesh), il nostro confratello p. Attilio Boscato. Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato il 30 agosto 1943 a Montecchio Prdecalcino (Vicenza - Italia).

Dopo due anni passati con i Sacerdoti del S. Cuore, nel 1956 il giovane Attilio entra nella casa saveriana di Vicenza dove finisce le scuole medie inferiori. Prosegue gli studi di Ginnasio a Zelarino (1958-1960) per poi vivere il noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli (1960-1961).

Dopo la prima professione religiosa e missionaria (emessa a Parma il 03.10.1961), il giovane Attilio continua con il consueto iter scolastico-formativo: liceo a Desio (1961-1963) e a Tavernerio (1963-1964), propedeutica a Parma (1964-1965), prefettato a Udine (1965-1966) e teologia a Parma (1966-1970).

Viene ordinato Presbitero nella cattedrale di Vicenza il 12 ottobre 1969.

Finiti gli studi teologici, p. Attilio viene destinato a Zaragoza (Spagna). Lì, dopo il periodo dello studio dello spagnolo, è impegnato nella Promozione Vocazionale (1970-1972).

Dopo un anno a Londra per lo studio dell’inglese (1972-1973), nel 1973 p. Attilio parte per il Bangladesh. Dopo qualche mese a Barisal (Khulna) per lo studio della lingua bengalese, viene mandato a Shimulia come viceparroco (1974-1976) e parroco (1976-1983). Nel frattempo, è anche consigliere regionale per un mandato.

Dopo un anno di aggiornamento in Italia (1983-1984), e sette mesi di preparazione a Manila (Filippine), presso l’East Asian Pastoral Institute, p. Attilio ritorna in Bangladesh, a Jessore, nel Centro Catechetico Nazionale come insegnante (1985-1990). Dal 1990 al 1992 è a Dhaka, nel Centro di Formazione e Promozione Vocazionale, impegnato soprattutto nel ministero.

Dal 1993 al 1996 lavora nella Diocesi di Mymensingh (cattedrale) come direttore del Pastoral and Social Centre. Dal 1996 al 2003 è a Dhaka (Xaverian House) impegnato nel ministero e nel ruolo di rettore (1996-2001). Dopo un periodo di aggiornamento, dove partecipa anche ai Tre Mesi di Formazione Permanente a Tavernerio (2003-2004), ritorna in Bangladesh, prima per alcuni mesi a Khulna, e poi a Mymensingh (2004-2019) come incaricato delle Attività Sociali e nell’impegno ministeriale. Nell 2019 ritorna a Dhaka (Xaverian House) impegnato nel ministero.

“Nel fare questa mia richiesta confido non tanto sulle mie povere forze, ma piuttosto sull’aiuto del Signore e la protezione della Vergine e Madre, e sul consiglio dei miei superiori. Possa questo mio passo condurmi ad una vita sempre migliore in modo da progredire così nel cammino della perfezione con lo spirito missionario e l’esempio del nostro venerato Fondatore…” (Domanda rivolta al Superiore Generale Mons. Gazza Giovanni per essere ammesso alla Professione Perpetua, Parma, 20 agosto 1967).    

Il 13 aprile 2022 viene ricoverato in ospedale a causa di dolori lombari e difficoltà respiratorie. Il 17 aprile 2022 p. Attilio sale in Paradiso per contemplare il Cristo Risorto e partecipare della vita eterna.

On Sunday, April 17^th, 2022, at 3:45 a.m. (local time), our confrere Fr. Attilio Boscato, 78, passed away in Hospital Square of Dhaka (Bangladesh). He was born in Montecchio Precalcino (Vicenza, Italy) on August 30^th, 1943.

In 1956, young Attilio entered the Xaverian house in Vicenza after having spent two years with the Priests of the Sacred Heart; in Vicenza he would complete middle school. He continued his studies at the junior high school (gymnasium) in Zelarino (1958-1960), and then began the year of novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli (1960-1961).

After his first missionary religious profession (Parma, October 3^rd, 1961), young Attilio underwent the then standard curriculum: senior high school in Desio (1961-1963) and Tavernerio (1963-1964), propaedeutics in Parma (1964-1965), prefect of students in Udine (1965-1966) and theological studies in Parma (1966-1970).

He was ordained priest in the Cathedral of Vicenza on October 12^th, 1969.

Upon completing his theological studies, Fr. Attilio was assigned to Zaragoza (Spain). There, following a period dedicated to the study of Spanish, he devoted himself to vocation ministry (1970-1972).

After studying English in London for one year (1972-1973), in 1973, Fr. Attilio departed for Bangladesh. He spent some months in Barisal (Khulna) to study Bengali, then was sent to Shimulia to work as assistant parish priest (1974-1976) and later as parish priest (1976-1983). Meanwhile, he became regional councillor for one term of office.

Fr. Attilio spent one sabbatical year in Italy (1983-1984) and seven months of training at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila (Philippines) to prepare for his return to Bangladesh, where he worked as teacher for the National Catechetical Training Centre in Jessore (1985-1990). From 1990 to 1992, he resided in Dhaka in the Centre for Formation and Vocation Ministry, engaged mainly in pastoral ministry.

From 1993 to 1996, he worked in the Diocese of Mymensingh (Cathedral) as director of the Pastoral and Social Centre. From 1996 to 2003, he was back in Dhaka (Xaverian House), engaged in ministry and in the role of rector (1996-2001). Following a sabbatical, during which he took part in the Three-Month On-going Formation in Tavernerio (2003-2004), he returned to Bangladesh. At first, he was for few months in Khulna, then moved to Mymensingh (2004-2019), where he became in charge of Social Activities and carried out pastoral ministry. In 2019, he returned to Dhaka (Xaverian House) to work in pastoral ministry.

“In presenting my request, I do not trust in my poor strength, rather in the help of the Lord and the protection of the Holy Virgin and Mother, as well as in my superiors’ good judgment. May the step I am taking lead me to an ever better life, in such a way that I will progress in the path of perfection with the same missionary spirit of our venerable Founder and by following his example …” (from the Petition to the Superior General, Msgr. Giovanni Gazza, to be admitted to the Final Profession, Parma, August 20^th, 1967).

On April 13^th, 2022, he was taken to the hospital because of lower back pains and breathing difficulties. On April 17^th, 2022, Fr. Attilio went up to Heaven to contemplate the Risen Christ and share in His eternal life.
