P. Angelo Paolucci

A Parma, in Casa Madre, alle 16.40 circa del 22.10.98, proprio mentre si concludeva la liturgia funebre per il P. Francesco Villa, è morto il P. Angelo Paolucci: il confratello aveva trascorso un lungo periodo di ricovero in clinica per i ripetuti attacchi di ischemia cerebrale cui era soggetto e il giorno precedente era stato riportato a casa.
Aveva 87 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Castelplanio (Ancona) l’11.01.1911.
Allievo del Seminario di Jesi fino alla quinta ginnasio, l’8.9.32 entrò tra i Saveriani a Parma dove visse tutto il suo periodo formativo: il Noviziato con la Prima Professione (1933), il Liceo, la Teologia con l’ordinazione a Presbitero il 18.5.39.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu, per un anno, Economo del Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli. L’anno successivo fu destinato alla Cina, ma a causa della guerra la spedizione, prevista per il giugno 1940, venne annullata.
P. Angelo trascorse un anno a Capriglio come cappellano e successivamente fu richiamato a Parma per l’Opera della Provvidenza vale a dire con il compito di procurare il cibo per la comunità. Furono sei anni (41-47) di interminabili pratiche burocratiche nei vari uffici cittadini per le tessere annonarie allora in vigore; di contabilità e corrispondenza per l’Opera Divina Provvidenza e soprattutto di avventurosi giri in quel di Parma, di Piacenza, ma anche di Pavia, Novara, Vigevano e Firenze per le questue più svariate: frumento, patate, castagne, riso, olio.
Nel 1947 fu inviato con il P. Ugo Cattenati in Spagna per iniziare la presenza saveriana nella patria di S. Francesco Saverio: il tentativo, date le difficoltà del momento, si concluse con il progetto di un apertura Saveriana in Messico. Fu quindi destinato al Messico. L’attesa del Visa si prolungò per più di cinque anni durante i quali il P. Angelo, che non riusciva a stare con le mani in mano, lavorò allo CSAM (50-54), incaricato della corrispondenza ordinaria del Centro, e fece parte del gruppo che realizzò il Grande Alveare e curò il doppiaggio delle Campane di Nagasaki: sempre come “factotum, modesto aiutante”, come amava sottolineare.
Gli fu anche proposto (1951) di guidare il gruppo dei primi Saveriani destinati al Pakistan Orientale: rispose che era pronto a partire, ma solo come gregario perché, come scrisse qualche tempo dopo, di fronte ad una analoga proposta: “Il mio posto è il facchino, il galoppino, e lì rendo anche abbastanza bene. Usatemi per quello per cui il Signore mi ha fatto!” (Lett. 15.2.55).
Poté raggiungere il Messico nel 1955 dopo aver trascorso alcuni mesi in Brasile Sud. Rimase a Mazatlán per nove anni: quelli eroici degli inizi; sempre con incarichi amministrativi, ma anche di Superiore e Formatore.
Nel 1964 fu nuovamente destinato alla Spagna dove, esclusi i sette anni di Consigliere Generale, a Roma, con l’incarico di Prefetto dell’Economia e della Vita Saveriana (‘71-‘77), visse fino al 1993, impegnato nell’economia e nell’accoglienza.
Nel 1993, provato nella salute, ottenne di essere trasferito a Parma in attesa della beata speranza..
P. Paolucci ha servito la missione compiendo quanto gli ha chiesto l’obbedienza: “Ricevo oggi la sua lettera con cui mi comunica la mia destinazione a Mazatlán. La ringrazio di cuore. Veramente Mazatlán non è la Missione sognata dalla prima giovinezza; ma è anche questa una missione. Del resto nella vita religiosa ciò che dà carattere di Missione ad ogni nostra incombenza, è l’Obbedienza. Accetto perciò la mia destinazione con questo carattere missionario pregando il Signore che mi dia la Grazia di fare qualcosa di bene” (Lett. 22.3.54).
Il Signore conceda il premio eterno a questo fratello che ha servito la Congregazione con tanta generosità.

At the end of the funeral Mass of Fr. Francesco Villa on Oct. 22 1998 in Parma, the news arrived of the passing away of Fr. Angelo Paolucci at the Mother House, around 4.40. He suffered a cerebral aneurysm. He was 87 years old, born at Castelplanio (Ancona) on Jan. 11 1911.
Student of the diocesan seminary of Jesi, he joined the Xaverians in Parma on Sept. 8 1932, and in Parma finished his formation: Novitiate with the profession of Vows on Sept. 12 1933, Liceo and Theology studies and ordination to the Priesthood on May 18 1939.
After ordination, he was treasurer of the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli for a year. He also received his assignment to China in 1940, but because of the war, this plan changed. He was soon working as Treasurer for the “Work of Divine Providence” in Parma, after a year in Capriglio, providing the community with food and lots of other means for the next 6 years. The period of 1941-47 was indeed a time of endless permits in various city offices, of accounts management and correspondence on behalf of the Work of Divine Providence. Plus, lots of adventurous trips around Parma, Piacenza, Pavia, Novara, Vigevano and Florence, collecting barley, potatoes, chestnuts, rice, and oil.
In 1947 he was assigned to Spain with Fr. Ugo Cattenati, to start a Xaverian presence in the land of the Xavier, but this did not come true, and the initiative veered towards Mexico instead. But his Visa did not arrived for 5 years. So he found himself being the “factotum” at the CSAM in Parma, following the daily correspondence, giving his expertise in the making of to the movies “Il Grande Alveare” (The Great Beehive) and “Campane di Nagasaki” (Bells of Nagasaki). Fr. Paolucci did this always as "modest helper" as he used to underline.
He was also asked to join the first group of Xaverians going to East Pakistan, but he felt that he did not have the “pioneer” spirit. "My place is indeed that of background work, of the porter, of messenger. where I can do a fair service. Use me according to the gifts that the Lord has given me!" (Letter of Feb. 15 1955)
He finally arrived in Mexico in 1955 after a few months in Southern Brazil. He worked in Mazatlan for 9 years in many administrative capacities, and also as Superior and formator.
In 1964 he was assigned to Spain where he spent most of his life, except for the period of service as Councilor of the General Direction (1971-77). In Spain he served in the fields of Economy and Xaverian Life. Because of health reasons, he came back to Parma in 1993.
Fr. Paolucci served the mission according to the vow of obedience: "I received today your letter of my destination at Mazatlan. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. In truth, Mazatlan is not the dreamed assignment of my first youth, but even that place is part of missionary activity. In fact, what gives character to Mission, in every situation of religious life, is Obedience. I therefore accept this assignment with this missionary aspect, and I pray the Lord that he may bestow upon me the Grace to do something good for the Reign!" (Letter of March 22 1954)
May the Lord give the eternal prize to this brother of ours who served the Congregation with much generosity.
