P. Amedeo Ghizzo

Dopo lunga malattia, e dovuto alle complicazioni del diabete, la sera del 3 novembre 2012 è morto a Parma alle ore 22:45 il P. Amedeo Ghizzo. Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Bergamo il 18.07.1930.
P. Amedeo inviò la domanda di entrare all’Istituto, tramite P. Lini, il 28 gennaio 1943: «Da molto tempo desidero diventare missionario … Desidero venire al più presto possibile». Il 15 febbraio, neppure un mese dopo, era a Grumone. Fece un corso intensivo di latino e in agosto passò a Vicenza per la seconda ginnasio (’43-’44). Ritornò quindi a Grumone per la III, IV e V ginnasio (’44-’47). A Settembre del ’47 iniziò il Noviziato a S. Pietro in vincoli con le idee molto chiare: «Il motivo che al presente mi induce a rimanere è la Gloria di Dio. Io considero lo stato Religioso-Missionario come il mezzo più efficace per dare gloria a Dio. Essendo l’uomo stato creato appunto per questo, io desidero dedicarmi nella vita che più corrisponde a questo fine» (Esame della vocazione, 2.1.47).
Alla fine del Noviziato emise la Prima Professione (12.9.48) e passò a Desio per i tre anni di Liceo (’48-’51). Nell’anno scolastico ‘51-’52 fu Prefetto a Vicenza. Infine frequentò i quattro anni di Teologia a Piacenza.
Rivelatrice del suo sentire in quegli anni è la domanda di ammissione al Presbiterato: « Sento come non mai in questo momento la temerarietà della mia posizione… ma è questa la Volontà del Signore… Perciò con i più grandi sentimenti di fiducia nella Divina Provvidenza che mi ha chiamato a così grandi cose nonostante la mia miseria, e con il più fermo proposito di corrispondere assolutamente a quello che la chiamata impone, liberamente e spontaneamente le chiedo di essere ammesso al Sacro ordine del Presbiterato» (9.2.56).
Fu ordinato presbitero il 17.3.1956.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato al Liceo (Desio) come vicerettore degli studenti, insegnante e studente alla Facoltà teologica di Venegono. L’anno successivo (‘57-’58) passò a Roma, studente del Biblico, per poi essere ridestinato al Liceo (’58-’60), ancora come vicerettore e per il ministero. Dal ’60 al ‘63 ricoprì l’incarico di Vicerettore della comunità di Vicenza, insegnante e ministero. «Furono per me molto duri –scrisse al P. Generale il 23.7.79 – anni di tensione nervosa, ma ero giovane, la carica formativa funzionava ancora bene e seppi superare tante prove».
Nel ’64 ebbe la sospirata destinazione alla missione. Dal 1965 al 1973 operò in Sierra Leone a Makeni, aiutante in cattedrale e successivamente incaricato di Masongbo e poi di Mapaki; insegnante alla Secondary School St. Francis e poi nel Collegio dei maestri.
Dal 1973 al 1985 fu in Italia dove completò gli studi accademici e insegnò in Teologia a Parma (74-77). Nel 79 conseguì presso l’Università Pontificia Salesiana la licenza in Teologia, specializzazione Pastorale, sezione Morale. Nel ’78 dovette sostare per curarsi un esaurimento nervoso che superò anche grazie alle fraterne attenzioni del Superiore Generale. Dal 1980 al 1985 insegnò scienze umane a Zelarino.
Dal 1986 al 1995 lavorò ancora in Sierra Leone (parroco a Yele e Kamalu e, dal 1988 a Makeni, addetto all’accoglienza in Episcopio, insegnante e cappellano delle prigioni). «L’essere di nuovo in Africa mi dà la vera dimensione della nostra vocazione che ci porta ad uscire dalle nostre sicurezze per tuffarci nell’immensa ricchezza che Dio sparge ovunque si trovino uomini e donne capaci di ascolto» (MS, febbraio ’86).
Nel 1996 ritornò definitivamente in Italia a Zelarino. Riprese le sue attività di animatore missionario e pubblicò la bella biografia di Mons. Azzolini, Fondatore e primo Vescovo della chiesa che è in Makeni.
Facendo un bilancio della sua vita in occasione del 50° di Sacerdozio P. Amedeo scrisse: «… Il primo sentimento che provo è di inginocchiarmi e di pregare con le parole del pubblicano: “O Dio, abbi pietà di me peccatore”. Ma mi sorprendo anche per tutte le occasioni in cui mi sono accorto d’essere stato strumento perché altre persone abbiano potuto incontrare lui, il Signore Gesù. Mi riempie di gioia questo ‘essere stato usato’ da Dio per il bene altrui, nonostante le mie fughe e le mie resistenze.
Mi resta ora il dovere di contemplare l’amore misericordioso di Dio in Gesù Cristo, che salva anche la mia storia e mi invita a perseverare nel convertirmi e a credere al vangelo» (MS, marzo 2006).

Fr. Amedeo Ghizzo died in Parma on 3 November 2012 after a long illness and complications of diabetes. Born in Bergamo, It aly, on 18 July 1930, he was 82 years old.
Fr. Amedeo applied to join the Institute on 28 January 1943: «I have wanted to be a missionary for a long time now … I want to join as soon as possible». On 15 February, he was already in Grumone. He did an intensive course in Latin before moving to Vicenza in August for the second year of high school (1943-44). He then returned to Grumone for the third, fourth and fifth years of high school (1944-47).
In September 1947 he began Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli with very clear ideas: «The reason for my vocation is the glory of God. I look upon the Religious-Missionary state as the most effective means for giving glory to God. Since man was created precisely for this, I desire to dedicate my entire life to pursuing this goal» (2.1.47).
He made his First profession on 12 September 1948 and went to Desio for the three years of Lyceum (1948-51). He served as Prefect at Vicenza during the academic year 1951-52. He then completed the four-year Theology course at Piacenza.
His application for admission to the priesthood gives us a glimpse of his personal feelings at the time: «I feel more than ever the audacity of my position … but it is God’s Will … Therefore, with the most profound trust in Divine Providence, which has called me to great things, in spite of my wretchedness, and with the firm resolve to fulfill the demands of this call, I freely and spontaneously ask to be admitted to the sacred Order of the Priesthood » (9.2.56). He was ordained priest on 17 March 1956.
After ordination he was sent to Desio as vice-rector of the student community, teacher and student at the Theology Faculty of Venegono. The following year (1957-58) he went to Rome, where he studied at the Biblicum before being sent back to Desio (1958-60), once again as vice-rector and to work in the pastoral
ministry. From 1960 un til 1963 he served as a teacher and Vice-rector of the Vicenza community; he also worked in ministry. He wrote to the Superior General on 23 July 1979: «these were very difficult and tense years for me, but I was young, my enthusiasm for formation was still intact and I managed to overcome many difficulties ».
In 1964 he received the long-awaited assignment to the mission. From 1965 until 1973 he worked in Sierra Leone, at Makeni, helping in the Cathedral; he was later put in charge of Masongbo and then Mapaki; he taught at the St. Francis Xavier Secondary School and at the Teachers College.
The years 1973-85 saw him in Italy where he completed his academic studies and taught in the Theology community of Parma (1974-77). In 1979 he obtained the Masters in Theology at the Pontifical Salesian University with a specialization in the pastoral ministry. In 1978 he had to take some time off for treatment
following a nervous breakdown, which he managed to overcome with the fraternal help of the Superior General. From 1980 until 1985 he taught human sciences at Zelarino.
From 1986 until 1995 he was in Sierra Leone once again (as parish priest at Yele and Kamalu and, from 1988, at Makeni, where he was responsible for hospitality at the Bishop’s House, as well as working as a teacher and prison chaplain). «Being back in Africa gives me the true dimension of our vocation, which forces us to abandon our securities so that we can embrace the immense richness that God bestows upon us, wherever there are men and women capable of listening » (Missionari Saveriani, February 1986).
In 1996 he returned definitively to Italy and was sent to Zelarino. He resumed his activity as a missionary animator and published a beautiful biography of Bishop Azzolini, the Founder and first bishop of the Church in Makeni.
Looking back on his life on the 50th anniversary of his ordination, Fr. Amedeo wrote: «… The first sentiment I feel is that I must kneel down and pray with the words of the publican: “Oh God, have mercy on me, a sinner”. Yet am filled with wonder by the fact that I have helped people to encounter the Lord Jesus. It fills me with joy to know that God ‘has used me’ for the good of others, in spite of my evasion and resistance. My duty now is to contemplate the merciful love of God in Jesus Christ, who also redeems my own life history and invites me to persevere in my conversion to the Gospel » (Missionari Saveriani, March 2006).
